INATO | Opening Exhibition

Last May 18, 2026, the BA Communication students for JOURN 135 B: Photojournalism officially opened INATO, a photo story exhibition of communities in Cebu, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Annie Fe Perez-Gallardo at the Jose T. Joya Gallery Faculty Wing.

β€œInato”, a Cebuano word that means something innate and distinctly our own, reflects the stories and identities rooted in Cebuano communities.

The exhibit features photo stories of Labogon, Mandaue’s Broommakers, the Pasil Fish Market, IT Park’s neighboring Karinderyas, and Suba-Pasil’s Tuslob Buwa and PusΓ΄ culture, offering intimate glimpses into the resilience, struggles, and connections that shape community life.

These collections of photographs highlight the importance of documenting local stories that are often left untold, unseen, and unheard, despite existing in everyday life.

The opening reception gathered exhibitors, students, faculty, and guests in celebration and support of the INATO exhibition, creating a space for appreciation and dialogue with the stories presented.

On May 19, 2026, students from the Communication Program of UP Cebu opened their finals exhibit for VC 128 (Photography), titled Taklob at the Comm Wing Jose T. Joya Gallery.

Taklob is a photography exhibition that pays homage to Filipino labor workers and common folk whose struggles often go unnoticed. Through a series of photographs, Taklob sheds light on the often-overlooked hardships faced by Filipino laborers, as unfair systems that continue to operate keep these individuals marginalized. Each photograph is an invitation for the audience to get engaged and reflect on how our lives are built on the struggles of the working class.

β€œTaklob is both a tribute and a call to conscience. Now, more than ever, is the time to witness and absorb.”

IMMINENT/IMMANENT | Thesis Exhibition by Giela Ann Delleva

Imminent/Immanent, a thesis exhibition by Giela Ann Delleva, opened at the Jose T. Joya Gallery on May 15, 2026, it presents a series of suspended soft sculptures that explore the body as a site of sensation, vulnerability, and persistence.

Engaging illness as a lived and embodied condition, the exhibition reflects on moments where sensation becomes heightened and the body asserts its presence. Through organic forms, layered textures, and suspended installations, the works showcase how the anticipation of change become inextricably linked from the immediacy of bodily experience. Informed by experiences of care, Imminent/Immanent invites viewers into a quiet and immersive encounter with what it means to inhabit a body in flux.

The exhibition navigates the tension between what is imminent and what is immanent, between what is approaching and what is already deeply present within the body.

The opening reception gathered students, faculty members, artists, and guests in support of emerging contemporary practices in sculpture and installation. The exhibition contributes to ongoing conversations on embodiment, care, and materiality within contemporary art practice.
