The film Himala by Ishmael Bernal unfolds during a total eclipse, a time when people fear the world is coming to an end. Amid the panic, a seemingly insignificant young woman named Elsa (played by Nora Aunor) claims to witness an apparition of the Virgin Mary on the hill where she was discovered as a baby and later adopted by Saling (Vangie Labalan). Though the villagers initially doubt her, their skepticism turns to belief when Elsa begins performing healings.

Fun fact: one of Bernal’s contributions to the Philippine’s cinema landscape is his bravery, he protested film censorship and was part of the Free the Artist movement and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines. His films, including those he directed during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, were also known for bearing feminist and social realist themes.

LAGKAW shines a light on the continued marginalization of women’s rights, highlighting the deep connections between these struggles and broader societal issues in areas such as the economy, education, health, and beyond. The film underscores a powerful truth: real progress is unattainable when the rights of women remain unrecognized, unsupported, and disrespected.

There can be no true advancement when any one person is left behind.
