China’s military-civil fusion strategy just entered a bold new phase. Images of the Zhong Da 79 cargo ship show it loaded with containerized vertical missile launchers, advanced radar, CIWS defenses, and even an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) — turning a once-civilian vessel into a modular war platform capable of launching drones and missiles at sea. A clear signal that naval power projection is being reimagined using commercial fleets.
• The vessel Zhong Da 79 — a medium-size cargo ship — has been spotted fitted with ~60 containerized vertical missile launchers (VLS), phased array radar, close-in weapon system (CIWS) and decoy launchers.
• More recent imagery shows it reconfigured to operate as a drone carrier with a truck-mounted electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) — suggesting China may be testing how to launch combat UAVs from converted merchant ships.
• These modules are containerized and detachable, aligning with Beijing’s broader military-civil fusion doctrine that blurs civilian and military capabilities for rapid surge in conflict.
