Russian prodigy Roman Shogdzhiev made chess history by becoming the youngest player ever to score an official Grandmaster (GM) norm. He achieved the feat at just 11 years and 1 month old during the Asian Individual Chess Championship 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in June 2026.

Notable Age Records in Chess

* Youngest player to achieve a GM norm:
Roman Shogdzhiev — 11 years, 1 month.
* Youngest Grandmaster in history:
Abhimanyu Mishra — earned the GM title at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days.
* Second-youngest Grandmaster in history:
Faustino Oro, popularly known as the “Messi of Chess,” earned the GM title at 12 years, 6 months, and 26 days.

These achievements highlight the increasingly competitive race among chess prodigies to reach elite milestones at ever-younger ages.

One of the standout members of the Dragon Chilling Team, the 2026 World Team Champions in both Rapid and Blitz, is none other than the reigning Women’s World Champion, Ju Wenjun.

Competing on the women’s board, she took on a crucial responsibility and delivered outstanding performances throughout the event, making a significant contribution to the team’s remarkable victory.

At 35 years old, Ju Wenjun is a five-time Women’s World Chess Champion, a former Women’s World Blitz Chess Champion, and a two-time Women’s World Rapid Chess Champion. In March 2017, she became only the fifth woman in history to achieve a FIDE rating of 2600. She first captured the Women’s World Championship title in May 2018 and successfully defended it in 2018, 2020, 2023, and 2025.

Congratulations to GM Ju Wenjun—a player who is simple and humble off the board, yet exceptionally dangerous across the chessboard. She is truly one of the greatest inspirations in the global women’s chess community.
