Not the beginning but where Head Lands started taking shape.
The first crossing or circling. Sketching from memory after sketching in situ and letting imagination take over.

Recurring form. Early exploration.

Arising from the liminal space between memory, rock and sea.

We speak of identity as ancestry associated with place. Of course it is - we feel it.

But ancestry and memory also behave as rock and sea. Natural processes shaped by erosion and deposition.

Head Lands where my work is focused now.

Emerging from work that stretches back at least 2 years, but to roots even deeper in time than that.

Head Lands is a working title that frames my focus for the next 12 months.

A liminal place centred in memory and ancestry.
A real place bordered by rock and sea.

Here I will draw, paint and write - continuing to develop and explore my interest - seeing where my work takes me. Letting it find it's own shape, as rock might when it meets the sea.

This form has been recurring and recurring in my work. Reappearing in many guises and reasserting itself even when I am trying to paint something else entirely.
Even in the one with the less obvious division of space I see it lurking!

Long weekends are made for quiet reflection (and playing with Fletcher).

I wrote a a heading 'What I Learned from my Insta Posts'.

Slowly looked back at all I'd done. 9 years worth.

What I'd missed.
What has been constant.
What has shifted.

I have 6 pages of notes!

Plenty to build on.

Making art is slow, frustrating, all consuming and occasionally invigorating.

Must be like panning for gold!

One day I'll hit the seam to mine. Until then a dream and the occasional nugget or bit of dust keep me going.

When I first posted this a few years ago I said 'one day I will tell you the story of this painting'.

Now seems appropriate.

I call it 'Moon Rise Above Shiraz'.

I used to travel a lot for work - often to Asia - and I'd pass via Dubai to break the journey.

One night I was flying in and looked out of my window.
Beyond my reflection I could see the full moon beneath us it appeared, just above a line of mountains.

A few moments later when I looked again was higher; and so it carried on, looking away, looking back, rising and rising until it was above us.

I looked at the in flight map.
This was above Shiraz in Iran.

It conjoured all kinds of magic.

My heart bleeds for this place now. So I wanted to share my memory.

Somewhere distant, unvisited, passed over - but ingrained on me nonetheless.

The multiple moons I saw are captured here. And in the process I seem to have caught my reflection too. My blue eye becoming a moon - or vice versa.

New work over old. Where fixed becomes altered by the ever moving.

A solid wall of rock or a solid wall of water?. Two immeasurable forces break in particle and spray.

Time erodes memory - an emerging theme for Head Lands work.
