Head Lands - early forms - watercolour and acrylic gesso. A1 on paper.

I think I'm playing more with colour and tone here than anything else.

The form repeats and repeats in many drawings from this time - as if I am locking it in my head and then I'm comfortable to take the brakes off the colour.

A small sketch in pencil and biro

It came to me with the sunrise. This morning.
A gathering.

I am thinking of my birthday and family. Of those I have lost.
I am thinking of my father. How much I miss him.
I am thinking of another year gone and the sun still rising.
I am thinking how fragile we've become. How we walk alone on intersecting and repeating lines. But never resting.
How lost we are.
And I am crying.

Landscape or portrait?

I am wondering if I have explored a sense of locality - eyeing a coastline from a shifting wave. Close to my intention.

Or is there a sense of a passing figure? Something hidden, unintended and subconscious.

Though I like the surprise of the latter I am pleased with the dynamism of the first.

Exploring thoughts and marks in watercolour heightens the emotion I feel and opens possibility.
I love the fluid nature (literally and metaphorically) of this medium.

These pieces, each mirroring another, were inspired by my favourite beach in the world - Gunwalloe.

Just thinking of it now as I write makes me cry.

In particular I like combining biro with watercolour. Both embrace mistakes. Both force me to be free or accepting or both.

This work is chaotic, but intentionally so - a release of unformed energy across two sheets of paper.

Somewhere in my mind I was thinking about what next? What's new? Where can I go? Can I find a new expression a new way in to my Head Lands work.

I found myself in familiar but altered memory, in new colour and looser, though recognisable marks.
But little unsure about what I've done.

The space or landscape I see is not one I am seeking.

Sometimes we move in small increments, nibbling at what might be but not quite getting there.

This is one of those.
