In the 90s and early 2000s, anime dubbed in the Philippines helped shape the way a generation saw heroism and defiance. Personally, Ghost Fighter (aka Yu Yu Hakusho) and Slam Dunk were my two favorite shows back then!

There was just so much fun and heart tangled in the awesome storylines that happened in these two iconic anime shows. You can't miss it!

At the center of that memory was a single voice. Neil Yu, a Filipino voice actor, became the defining sound of two of pop culture’s most unforgettable hotheads: Hanamichi Sakuragi from Slam Dunk and Alfred, known as Kuwabara in Ghost Fighter.

Both characters were brash, stubborn, and often ridiculous. Yet beneath the bravado, they carried grit, loyalty, and an underdog resolve that struck a chord with young viewers. Neil’s delivery carried that balance. Loud but never empty. Funny but grounded.

He didn’t just dub lines. He gave attitude weight. He made impulsiveness sound heroic, which was something I gravitated towards to (the heroism, not the impulsiveness hehe)

For many who tuned in after school, the voice was familiar before the names were. It was the sound of mischief, pride, and unexpected courage.

Neil Yu voiced rebels. And in the process, voiced a generation that learned to fight back with heart. This post is dedicated to him and his large part in my childhood, as well as the other people in my generation!

Did you know Sakuragi and Alfred were voiced by the same man, Neil Yu? Well, now you do!
