Everything Is Loss for the Sake of Christ
Philippians 3:7–8
“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.” — Philippians 3:7
Reflection
Before Paul encountered Christ, he had many things that could have given him confidence in his identity and righteousness. He was an Israelite, from the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. He was circumcised, a Pharisee, zealous in his religious devoted, and a persecutor of the church. According to the righteousness he believed he had through the law, he considered himself blameless.
Yet when Paul encountered Christ, his perspective completely changed.
The things he once considered gain, he now considered loss for the sake of Christ. His achievements, religious status, identity, and everything he could boast about were nothing compared to knowing Jesus.
Paul was not saying that his possessions or accomplishments had no value at all. Rather, he realized that nothing in this world can compare with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
Personal Realization
Everything from our past—our identity, possessions, achievements, beliefs, work, and even the things we are proud of—must take their proper place when we come to know Christ.
We cannot pretend that we are worthy or find our worth in the things of this world. When we truly encounter Jesus, we realize that everything is nothing compared to Christ.
Do not define yourself by what you have, what you can do, what people think about you, your past, your career, or your achievements.
Your greatest identity is found in Christ.
Having possessions and blessings is not wrong. They can be gifts from God, but they should never become more important than God Himself. Instead, use what God has entrusted to you for His glory.
The blessing should never become greater than the One who blessed you.
