The scene depicts the event immediately after Eve and Adam exercised free will when they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Free will is represented by color yellow that dominates the background.
On the day Adam and Eve exercised free will, their status of immortality died, they lost their immortality. The couple became mortal beings. They are shown in their mortal state wearing leaves to cover their nakedness.
