"A Theory of Small Collisions" implies compression as the consequence of things occupying the same space. Forms gather, overlap, and press into one another, each small encounter changing the shape of what surrounds it. Nothing here collides hard enough to break. It simply changes the arrangement. Just as drops of water meet and displace one another, these small forces accumulate, gradually changing the shape of what surrounds them.

"Statics of Rigid Bodies" considers tension as a state of being held between opposing forces. Its forms pull against one another, extending and locking into place, as though the whole structure is suspended by the effort of everything trying to move away. Perhaps rigidity is not the absence of movement, but the effort required to resist it. Very much like how we inhabit systems that ask us to remain still while everything around us shifts.
