𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐚
An ancient Filipino word that bears a meaning of imagination and aspiration; from the team’s imagination, now a realized aspiration.
This costume is inspired from the movie, Raya and the Last Dragon, which is the surrounding theme (alongside Encanto for the other team) of our Set and Costume Design project “Entablado at Disenyo: Papel at Habi sa Teatro” in CAED118 and CAED128 — a collaboration of the BCAEd Sophomores and Juniors.
The ensemble showcases traditional textiles — banig and rattan — in rendezvous with tulle, beads, chains, and spray paint to create a gilded piece that embodies the bravery of Raya herself.
The bodice is composed of three attachments — corset, chest armor, and waist armor — embellished with gold chains to encapsulate the warrior psyche of Raya. The draping of tulle in four different shades of blue resonates to water as the main element flowing throughout the course of the film. Lastly, the headpiece is referential to Raya’s signature salakot stylized with lace and beads to imitate the dripping of rain.
RAYA: Agos ng Kagitingan truly justifies the direction and vision of our team; epitomizing Raya’s resolute flow of bravery. 🐉🗡️💧
Exhibiting at the Institute of Human Kinetics Lobby from June 05-09, 2023.
