The National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the country’s literary community mourns the death of Mariano “Marne” Kilates, celebrated poet and translator, and former member of the National Committee on Language and Translation.

Born in Albay and a true Bikolano, Sir Marne has left the community with a rich collection of evocative poetry and many a number of skillful translations. His poetry collections include Children of the Snarl, Poems en Route, Mostly in Monsoon Weather, Pictures and Poems and other (Re)visions, Time’s Enchantment & Other Reflections, and Lyrical Objects: New and Selected Poems. His work often delved into the intricacies of Filipino life, culture, and the human experience. As an author, Kilates received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards, the National Book Awards, and the Southeast Asian Writers Award. His literary contributions and commitment to Filipino culture have left an indelible mark on the country's artistic landscape.

Kilates was also celebrated translator and was a member of the National Committee on Language and Translation. Works of National Artists Rio Alma, Bienvenido Lumbera, and Lazaro Francisco were huge part of Kilates’ translation work highlighting his dedication to bringing Filipino literature to a wider audience.

He was consultant to former NCCA Chairman National Artist Virgilio Almario and has been a key resource person in various NCCA projects including Usapang Wika, Lemlunay, and the Sanghaya books.

In lieu of flowers, financial donation to the family is requested.

FIRST BOOK ON THE PHILIPPINES ,1523.
This rare first edition, in mint, condition, preserved in the Clements Library in the University of Michigan is an account of the Magellan expedition, taken down by Maximilian of Transylvania, for the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, shared in a letter to the Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg.
My first time to physically handle a copy. Hidden inside the beautiful leather-bound tome are the bookseller's notes. The National Library of the Philippines has a copy from the Tabacalera Collection secured in a vault, not as fine as this one that looks like it just came from the printers.

Celebrate World Theatre Day!

World Theatre Day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute ITI. It is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day Message through which at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. The first World Theatre Day Message was written by Jean Cocteau in 1962.

This year, the ITI Message was authored by Egyptian Actress Samiha Ayoub.
