Tensions in the West Philippine Sea have intensified again after reports that Chinese researchers briefly landed on Sandy Cay near Pag-asa Island while operating alongside a China Coast Guard es**rt vessel. Philippine authorities continue to monitor activities in the disputed area amid ongoing maritime confrontations between Beijing and Manila.
According to reports, the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 33 was seen operating near Sandy Cay, raising concerns over unauthorized activities and continued gray-zone operations in contested waters. Analysts say the incident highlights the growing strategic competition in the South China Sea as both sides increase patrols and maritime presence.
The Philippines maintains that activities within its Exclusive Economic Zone must comply with international law and the 2016 arbitral ruling under UNCLOS, which rejected China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea. Beijing, however, continues to assert sovereignty claims over most of the disputed waters.
The latest development adds to rising regional tensions involving coast guard operations, maritime surveillance, and competing territorial claims in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
