Before the river. Before the tugging. Before the kina-ag is thrown into the rushing waters, there is a journey.

On Punnuk day, the people of Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan leave their communities and make their way to Nunhipukana - the meeting point of the Hapao River and its tributary.

The three communities approach from different directions: Hapao from the east, Baang from the southwest, and Nungulunan from the west. They pass through rice terraces and narrow paths, dressed in their traditional attire, carrying the pakid and kina-ag decorated with dong-a leaves.

There is chanting. There is cheering. There is playful taunting between communities. The kina-ag is swayed, the pakid is raised, and dong-a leaves are waved in the air. The voices grow louder as the groups draw closer to the Nunhipukana.

It is almost as if the journey itself is announcing: the harvest is over. Punnuk has begun.

Among the traditional chants heard along the way is โ€œ๐™‡๐™ช๐™  ๐™ก๐™ช๐™  ๐™‹๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ช๐™ , ๐™ก๐™ช๐™  ๐™ก๐™ช๐™  ๐™‹๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ช๐™ ,โ€ a boastful call of the villagers marking the beginning of the rite.

From three different directions, three communities converge at one river.

And that is perhaps one of the most beautiful things about Punnuk: before they compete against one another in the river, they first come together as one community of people, carrying with them the harvest, the traditions, the stories, and the spirit of generations before them.

But the Punnuk story begins much earlier - on the paths, through the terraces, in the chants, and in the footsteps of the people making their way homeward to the river.

Three communities. Three paths. One river. One tradition.

In 1997, after Punnuk had been dormant for a time, the traditional post-harvest ritual returned to the Hapao River through the efforts of the local community, including Hapao sculptor and cultural advocate ๐™‡๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฏ ๐™‰๐™–๐™ช๐™ฎ๐™–๐™˜, with support from Baguio-based filmmaker and National Artist ๐™†๐™ž๐™™๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™๐™–๐™๐™ž๐™ข๐™ž๐™ .

Kidlatโ€™s connection to Punnuk did not end with its revival. Over the years, he has continued to visit Hapao and witness the ritual as the community keeps the tradition alive.

So when Kidlat stood along the Hapao River during Punnuk 2026, he was not there merely to watch.

He was there as someone who was part of the story of Punnukโ€™s revival - now witnessing a tradition that continues to live, not simply as a memory of the past, but as a practice carried forward by the people of Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan.

Nearly three decades after its revival, the tugging continues. The pakid is still pulled, the kina-ag still makes its journey downstream, and generations continue to gather by the river.

Perhaps that is the most meaningful part of Punnukโ€™s story: ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™–๐™œ๐™š ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ช๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™š๐™ง๐™ซ๐™š๐™™ ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™—๐™ฎ ๐™ง๐™š๐™ข๐™š๐™ข๐™—๐™š๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ž๐™ฉ.

And at 83 years old, Kidlat Tahimik continues to make the journey to Hapao, still strong enough to stand by the river, still curious enough to witness, and still deeply connected to a tradition he once helped bring back to life.

On August 22, 2026, the people of Hungduan, Ifugao will celebrate Punnukโ€”the traditional post-harvest tug-of-war ritual that marks the culmination of the Huwah harvest rites. More than a spectacle, Punnuk is a living tradition that embodies thanksgiving, unity, and the enduring cultural identity of the Ifugao people. It is proudly recognized on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Due to the effects of the prevailing weather disturbance, all hikers, cyclists, campers, trail runners, and outdoor enthusiasts are strongly advised to postpone non-essential outdoor activities until conditions improve.

Heavy rains may result in slippery trails, swollen rivers, flash floods, landslides, and poor visibility, making outdoor adventures significantly more dangerous.

Officially opened to visitors on June 26, 2026, Tatayaen Cave is the municipality's newest ecotourism attraction, following years of exploration, assessment, and careful preparation by the local government, partner agencies, and the communities of Barangays Ankileng and Balugan.

Discovered by local residents in 2023, the site was once a grazing area and an old burial ground. Today, it has been transformed into an incredible destination featuring massive limestone formations, underground chambers, crystal-clear waters, and a unique underground river.

What makes Tatayaen Cave stand out is that it offers two adventures in one:

๐Ÿชจ Cave Spelunking Zone โ€“ Explore stunning rock formations and natural chambers on foot.

๐Ÿšฃ Underground Boating Zone โ€“ Experience a rare boat ride through an underground river deep inside the cave.

The name 'Tatayaen' comes from the local dialect, meaning "to catch," inspired by the natural water catch basins found within the cave.

To protect its fragile ecosystem, Tatayaen Cave is classified as a Class II Cave, meaning visits are regulated. Guests must be accompanied by accredited cave guides; visitor numbers are limited, and seasonal closures may be implemented during the rainy season to ensure safety and conservation.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Entrance Fee: โ‚ฑ1,000 per group of five persons (inclusive of guide and boat fees)

๐Ÿ“ All visitors must first register at the Sagada Tourism Office in Poblacion before proceeding to the site.

Tatayaen Cave now joins the famous Sumaguingโ€“Lumiang Cave Connection and Balangagan Cave as one of Sagada's officially opened cave attractions, further strengthening the municipality's reputation as one of the Philippines' premier destinations for nature and adventure tourism.

If you visit, help keep this incredible place pristine by following your guide's instructions, wearing the required safety gear, leaving no trace, and respecting the cave's fragile formations and wildlife.

Congratulations to the Municipality of Sagada, the local communities, guides, and everyone who worked to responsibly open another remarkable destination for future generations.
