Today, we celebrate the 37th Cordillera Day, a significant milestone for our beloved region. This day is not just a commemoration of our cultural heritage but also a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Cordilleran people. As we honor this special day, let's take a moment to reflect on the rich history and vibrant traditions that define the Cordillera region.
The Cordillera Day traces its roots back to the struggle for autonomy and self-determination. This day was first celebrated on July 15, 1987, following the signing of Executive Order No. 220 by then-President Corazon Aquino. This order established the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), comprising the provinces of Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao, Mountain Province, and the City of Baguio. The creation of CAR was a significant step towards recognizing the unique identity and rights of the Cordilleran people.
The celebration of Cordillera Day is marked by various activities that showcase the region's rich cultural heritage. These include traditional dances, music, rituals, and the display of indigenous crafts and textiles. It is a day when Cordillerans come together to celebrate their shared history and cultural identity, fostering a sense of unity and pride among the people.
The Cordillera region is known for its stunning landscapes, from the terraced rice fields of Ifugao to the majestic mountains of Benguet. The Igorot, Kankanaey, Ibaloi, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao, and other indigenous peoples have preserved their cultural practices through generations, contributing to the rich tapestry of Cordilleran culture.
On this day, we also remember the sacrifices and contributions of our ancestors who fought for the rights and welfare of the Cordilleran people.
