WHO IS RANYAG ANTHONY QUITASOL?

Last Monday, a few of our kailyans called out the wearing of indigenous attire during the People’s SONA mobilization. They called it as inappropriate, bastardizing, and sacrilegious. They ridiculed the man who was wearing it, called him names, trolled him, and even accused him of being “bayaran.” But who is he, really?

His name is RANYAG ANTHONY QUITASOL, a proud Igorot, and our member-artist from Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya. His father is Aldwin Quitasol, a Kankanaey from Tadian, Mountain Province, and his mother is Kimberlie Ngabit-Quitasol, a Tuwali from Kiangan, Ifugao. So yes for the record, RANYAG is a FULL-BLOODED IGOROT. His parents are full-time community journalists, and were cultural activists too during their university days. Ranyag was already active in community and cultural events during his childhood days, as he was a member of Children of the Cordilleras or CHICO. When he joined ARKIW, he became more aware and conscious about the issues and concerns of fellow indigenous peoples here in the Cordilleras. He has been to many villages in the Cordilleras, immersing himself to the culture and ways of life in the ili. He is very active in facilitating cultural workshops with fellow indigenous youth, and in participating in cultural immersions learning from the ancestral knowledge of our elders.

We encourage our fellow indigenous youth to be more active in community concerns and affairs, and to uphold the heritage of persistence and resistance of our ancestors. 💗✊

UPDATE ‼️‼️‼️

At muli naming panawagan,

ALERT!

Baguio-based artist Jose Mari "Juan" Obra was among those arrested during the People's State of the Nation Address (SONA) protest in Quezon City today, July 27.

Juan is a member of the Cordilleran performing arts mass organization Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya. According to the organization, Juan was brought to Camp Caringal, Eastern Police District Headquarters, at Station 6 in Quezon City.

51 individuals were arrested today during the People's SONA protest in Quezon City. According to Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, the arrests were made over alleged violations of local ordinances and special laws, especially rules against covering one’s face.

However, it was caught by media personnel that the individuals who were violently arrested by police officers were protesters who are members of several progressive organizations, paralegal staff, and even minors—protesters that the police forces earlier swore they will exercise maximum tolerance on and will respect their freedom of expression.

Baguio artist among those reportedly held after SONA protest

By Frank Cimatu
July 27, 2026

A Baguio-based artist and worker was reportedly arrested by police during protests held in connection with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s 2026 State of the Nation Address, according to a statement released by the group Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya.

The group identified the individual only as Juan, describing him as an artist and member of the working class from Baguio City.

It alleged that he was "illegally arrested" and brought to Camp Caringal, the Eastern Police District headquarters, and later to Quezon City Police Station 6. The circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately clear.

Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya said Juan has used his art to express the experiences and aspirations of ordinary Filipinos and to advocate for human rights, freedom and dignity.

The group condemned what it described as continued harassment and intimidation of activists and protesters, alleging repeated violations of human rights by law enforcement authorities.

It called for the release of all individuals arrested during the SONA 2026 protests and demanded accountability for those responsible for alleged rights violations.

Police authorities had not immediately issued a statement on the allegations at the time of writing. The claims could not be independently verified.

UPDATE‼️‼️‼️‼️

Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya and Salidummay performs the song "Bakir" during The Forest Table of Sagada held in New World Makati Hotel, Makati City last July 18, 2026.

Our forests was sustained and nurtured by indigenous peoples since the olden days. It provides us our food and medicine in every day that passes. Let us protect the forests that provides our necessities, let us be in solidarity with the indigenous peoples that protect and defend our forests 🌳💗✊

"Bakir" is composed by Marlon Gomarcho, and popularized by Salidummay through their 2007 album "Chuwassi"

Special thanks to Gulay Na, Department of Tourism Cordillera Administrative Region, and Partners for Indigenous Knowledge Philippines - PIKP for this great opportunity to share Cordillera music and culture to more people!
