A company in China has just introduced something pretty unusual: “unhappy leave.”

Retail chain Pang D**g Lai now lets employees take up to 10 days off a year if they simply don’t feel happy. The founder said, “Everyone has times when they’re not happy, so if you’re not happy, don’t come to work.”

Managers are not allowed to refuse these requests, which makes it quite different from the usual “mental health day” idea.

This comes on top of already generous benefits for staff: 7-hour workdays, weekends off, 30–40 days of annual leave, and strong pay compared to industry averages. Even janitors can earn up to the equivalent of $70k a year depending on their skills.

It has sparked a lot of discussion. Some see it as a progressive approach to workplace wellbeing, especially in contrast with the punishing “996” culture (9am to 9pm, 6 days a week). Others wonder how it would work if lots of employees decided to be “unhappy” at the same time.
