HISTORY/PROFILE
The Maskara Theatre Ensemble was conceived in La Salle College when it was founded by Peque Gallaga in 1972. The organization which used to be called “Crossing Kamatis Rapapap Kutsi-Kutsi Society” then changed to “The La Salle Theatre Guild” was created to enhance the cultural development among its members. In 1973, the group bore the name “Maskara Theatre Ensemble”, the first wo
rd which had been derived from the logo representing the Igorot symbol for fertility, designed by graphic designer Franco Patriarca. Under the guidance of its founder, the organization provided training in the fundamentals of community theatre, then became a campus club in 1974. The Maskara Theatre Ensemble was officially recognized as an organizational organization – together with the University Chorale, the University Band and the Kariktan Dance Ensemble (now known as the Jean Baptiste Dance Company), when the University of St. La Salle launched its Cultural Program, which was aimed to expose the Lasallian Communityto the different art forms for cultural awareness and appreciation in 1990. Since its conception, Maskara had become an outlet for people who love to do theatre work and who believe in the magic of theatre. It serves to cultivate the foundation of theatre in entertainment, education and advocacy through the extensive and rigorous training it provides its members; and the varied productions it represents to the community. To make theatre more suitable to the realities of the times, Maskara initiated the presentation of improvisational plays as part of its outreach activities and of its effort to bring theatre to a wider audience. It has also actively participated in festivals, conferences, and exchanges to develop networks and linkages and to enter into possible collaborations with other theatre groups and artists from all over the country. The moving force behind the continuing growth of Maskara Theatre Ensemble has always been the group’s sheer love for theatre work and the desire to share themselves with the community. After years of training, experimenting and hard work, Maskara has become an active force in the cultural life of the school, the community and the region at large. MTE Officers (A.Y. 2025-2026)
