Staring into her reflection on the window, she looks for a flickering ember of hope, kept alive only by her own exhausted breath. Amidst the heavy silence, her thoughts are as loud as thunder; to her, the air feels suffocating.

A question lingers: โ€œPaano na?โ€ โ€” a quiet plea shaped by uncertainty, not just for herself, but for the small life she holds close. The reflection does not answer; it only returns a gaze fractured by everything that stands between what is and what should have been.

This piece was created with the afflicted in mindโ€”those who suffer under the greedy hands of a nationโ€™s supposed โ€œprotectors.โ€ We live in a world where what should protect instead extracts, and taxes given in trust are redirected by the powerful, leaving behind a hollow absence of support.

Nothing appears broken at first glance, yet everything is misaligned. On the table, newspapers speak of a failing government beside neatly counted coins which is all that remains. A handless clock signifies time suspended, a cycle offering no way forward. In the heavy darkness of a blackout, a single candle provides the only light.

The motherโ€™s eyes reflect a deep despondency, yet the faint glint from the candle suggests she hasnโ€™t completely given in. A childโ€™s small hands caress her face, offering comfort or perhaps seeking protection from the gathering gloom.

How cruel is a reality where the word โ€œpoliticianโ€ feels hollow and justice is nowhere to be found? They build luxury for themselves while the people sink, taking what could have been sustenance for the hungry to build their own abundance. We are left suffocating under a kingdom of cackling crows, surviving in the shadows of those who were meant to lead us into the light.

Corruption often steals from our Farmers and Fishermen, leading them to be underpaid. Destroying both land and sea for their own benefits, making our producers live in poverty after poverty. Because of their selfishness our land and sea are poisoned, poor government support and lack of action in our environment. While our Farmers and Fishermen are working hard to earn food for themselves and for their family, these human-alligators enjoy swallowing the hard earned work of our people.

This work portrays the greed of our corrupt politicians and how they are hungry for money. Doesn't matter if they stole it, they will do anything for money.

The waltz is a traditional ballroom dance long associated with elegance, structure, and formality. In this painting, a man and woman are captured mid waltz dip. Traditionally, the man leads while the woman follows, and this dynamic becomes a metaphor for power imbalance, vulnerability, and control. The woman is lowered and suspended, dependent on the manโ€™s hold, while he remains upright and composedโ€”steady in his authority.

The glowing archway in the background suggests that truth inevitably comes to light, no matter how deeply it is concealed. This warm illumination contrasts with the dark surrounding reds, purples, and browns, colors that evoke tension, mystery, and moral corruption. These tones reflects how corruption often hides behind a polished, respectable exterior.

The falling money symbolizes public wealth slipping awayโ€”misused, exploited, and taken by corrupt leaders. As the man directs the dance, he represents those in positions of power who maintain dominance over society. The woman, dipped low and reliant on his support, embodies the people placed in a precarious positionโ€”sustained only at the discretion of those who lead.

โ€œDance with the Devilโ€ questions the stability of a system where leadership serves itself rather than its people. When governance becomes synonymous with corruption, trust erodes, and citizens are left wondering where to turn. The painting ultimately challenges viewers to confront this imbalance and consider what it means to interrupt the dance before the fall becomes irreversible.

"Do you know them" because of their true service to the people?
Or "Do you know them" just because they are your idol, your family, or your friendโ€”while choosing to ignore their corruption?โ€

This painting shows a greedy, thick-skinned, and unashamed crocodile statue, decorated with heavy garlands, gold and delicate sampaguita flowers. Yet here, it is honored like a hero, crowned and adorned as if it deserves to be praised.

Known for its pure white color and sweet fragrance, the sampaguita in this work conceal the true stench of greed. The painting questions why people continue to glorify leaders they know are corrupt. Is it because the politician is a famous actor? An idol seen on television? A family friend? A relative? A member of a powerful political dynasty? Personal loyalty and celebrity status often overpower truth and accountability.

โ€œVotar ko sa imoโ€ reflects a painful reality: even when the truth is visible, it is easier to admire the shine of gold and the sweetness of flowers than to confront the smell beneath. This artwork challenges viewers to ask themselvesโ€”ginatahur ta bala ang matuod nga pagpanguna, ukon ginadayandayanan ta lang ang korapsyon?

The abuse of power in a system where justice is measured by wealth and outweigh morality. The legal term arresto menor, a punishment for minor offenses โ€” shifts to โ€œa rest to majorโ€ suggesting how those guilty of greater crimes remain untouched, even comfortable.

At the center, Lady Justice no longer stands in prudence, but reclines on a luxurious couch between a pig and a crocodile โ€” figures symbolizing greed and corruption. Her blindfold, once a symbol of fairness, becomes a mark of moral blindness. She clings to the pig with one hand, while the other pierces a sack of rice โ€” the very sack that led to Juan Dela Cruzโ€™s imprisonment after he stole food to survive. His survival made him a criminal, while the corruption that starved him and led him to resort to such act remains unpunished.

Surrounding them are sacks of money and others marked only with question marks, implying the hidden remains of past victims. A pork barrel sits behind the pig, referencing the misuse of public funds. On the ground lie skulls, broken scales, and Juanโ€™s mugshot plate reading โ€œOffense: Stole food to survive.โ€ A handcuff coils around the sword of justice, yet Juan Dela Cruz is nowhere to be seen โ€” who knows what had already happened to him. The law meant to protect him has been restrained, manipulated, and redirected.

In this piece, Lady Justice is not simply blindโ€”she is blinded by money, influence, and comfort. With the influence of money, she forgets who to arrest. The weak are punished; the powerful sleep easy. The work questions a system where justice is no longer served, but bought.

Two-faced. A deceitful figure where oneโ€™s true colors lay within. The mask, the act, presents a care for the people, for the country, for our future. The doll concealed shows the true intentions of these people. They chase money, power, status. They do not care if we starve or if weโ€™re dying. They do not care that we spend our days clawing at the merciful hands of the Lord for mercy. All they want is whatโ€™s best for them.

The politician depicted is a placeholder for many of the politicians in our government right now. For corruption stems out to every part of it. From the lowest to the highest positions.

โ€œMa, ngaa waay ta pagkaon haw?โ€

The question is small, but in the suffocating silence of a week-long blackout, it carries the weight of a landslide. It is the sound of innocence colliding with the jagged, rusted edge of systemic neglectโ€”a childโ€™s voice seeking a logic that simply does not exist in a country where greed is the primary currency.

Through this digital painting, I explore the visceral reality of pag-kanugonโ€”the mourning of a stability that has been hollowed out from the inside.

The glass bowl and the heavy vase are the ghosts of a former lifeโ€”relics of a time when the familyโ€™s financial status was stable. Now, they sit as hollow monuments, rendered empty by the relentless erosion of inflation and the financial decline of a nation where the rich grow fat while the poor are left to wither.

I painted the mother with eyes rimmed by the salt of exhaustionโ€”a reflection of my own experiences and the collective fatigue of every Filipino parent who has had to explain the unexplainable.

Beside her, the child looks directly at you. There is no blame in his gazeโ€”and that is the true tragedy. He does not know yet that the darkness in his home is a man-made shadow. He does not see that the "slow move" of the authorities to repair the typhoonโ€™s wreckage is not a lack of resources, but a lack of will. He cannot see the luxury purchased with his stolen light.

Through this work, I am documenting a theft. Every centavo lost to corruption is a grain of rice taken from this childโ€™s mouth. This is a reminder that in the face of greed, "wasting" isn't just an accidentโ€”it is a crime.

This is a cry for the future that was snatched away, leaving us to sit in the dark, staring at an empty plate, wondering when the light will finally be earned back for the people.

I know a full table exists elsewhereโ€”but not here.

Kailan kaya maimulat ng mga tao ang kanilang mga mata sa reyalidad? Kasing dumi ang politika kahit kailan. Pagbabanta sa mga tao, pagpipigil sa pagsabi ng katotohanan;
Ang katotohanang kinatatakutan nilang malaman ng lahat, ang mga kasinungalingang ginawa nila para pagtakpan ang maruruming gawa ng kanilang mga kamay.

Money made by ceaseless labor has become something used for luxury or a self benefit rather than a benefit for all. A benefit that wouldโ€™ve been for all has been catered to for simply the select few, corrupt people with power. He uses his resourcesโ€“our moneyโ€“ to avoid the flood. What couldโ€™ve been a benefit to the community has become a benefit for oneโ€™s self. What couldโ€™ve benefitted the elderly, the children, and the daily worker, tossed aside for personal gain.

Consequences linger, and those consequences affect the common folk the most. Yet those with power continue to look away from the effects, the suffering and those who are affected. They will continue to consume and spend like royalty, and leave our community to pick up the pieces of another ghosted flood project.

Let us face it: Our country has never been poor, it simply continues to suffer the consequences of the corrupt, those who were voted haphazardly, those who continue to be disingenuous with how our money is spent. We have our own duty as citizens, and that is to choose the right leaders. Our vote dictates the future of our country, and how our everyday life will be shaped. We have the choice to choose wisely or poorly. Corruption is unavoidable, but ignorance is not. Continue noticing, observing, and keep being aware.

We mostly refer to calling our nation our "home" since it is a place where we may live with pride and comfort. But after everything that has been happening, can we truly call this nation our home? All of the injustice that continues to occur in this nation is witnessed by us Filipinos. Countless homes were taken away from us due to disasters, and our hard-earned money was squandered for "projects" that were meant to help us. When one has gone through all those events, can one still truly refer to this nation and call it their "home?". Will we continue to ignore the obvious and continue to vote for unworthy candidates? If not, why keep casting your vote for them.

They charm you with words, and by them mentioning something related to giving you money, you are suddenly enticed to vote for them. But don't be fooled, it's just one of their empty promises that they won't even keep. We should set aside our own selfishness also and make sure to choose what is right not only for you but for every Filipino as well, because we all deserve a life and a system that is fair for all of us.
