Meet Our Speaker: Dr. Abraham “Ambo” Garcia Jr.

Artist, academic, and curator, Dr. Ambo Garcia bridges art, education, and cultural advocacy through his work across Mindanao, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Currently an Associate Professor at Ateneo de Davao University, his research and curatorial projects—spanning from Panit Bukog and the Singapore Biennale to the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2024)—explore the evolving identities of Filipinos in translocal and cross-cultural contexts.

A member of the NCCA National Committee on Visual Arts (2023–2025), Dr. Garcia continues to shape the discourse on contemporary art and curatorship in Mindanao and beyond.

Join us at VIVA ExCon Aklan 2025 as he shares his insights on art, place, and the power of cultural connection.

As we come close to the next VIVA ExCon, we would like to show appreciation to one of the many instrumental people behind this biennale. VIVA ExCon 2020 was not short of challenges, but Patrick Flores delved with us into the realm of uncertainty brought by the pandemic, encompassing borders despite the limitations. This kind of unwavering commitment and drive to showcase Visayan Art fuels the whole community, and we thank you for that.

Happy birthday, Patrick!

What is VIVA EXCON?

VIVA EXCON (Visayas Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference) is a Visayas-wide biennale which was started by the art group Black Artist in Asia in 1990 in Bacolod City and whose hosting has since then toured the Visayan Islands every two years without fail. It has become an effective artist-centered blueprint with which other like initiatives have been patterned after. It was the main goal of VIVA ExCon to celebrate Visayan art by bridging the islands of the Visayas so as to provide a venue to facilitate dialogues, interaction, networking and cultural exchanges, thus addressing fundamental and relevant issues among visual art communities and related stakeholders. Having accomplished such goals in the 30 years of its existence, it now looks towards the future in ways that can best contribute to the development of the communities it serves.
