In most cases the wife sales were symbolic. Only one person would bid - the woman’s new lover. Occasionally, there wasn’t a designated buyer, though, and an actual bidding war broke out. Men did not have to inform their wives of the sale so total strangers could bid on her.

This mask, from Mexico, dates to the 15th to 16th century CE. The mask foundation is cedar wood with turquoise inlays on it. The eyes are mother-of-pearl, and teeth are from conch shells. Some people consider turquoise a love charm. When received as a gift, it is supposed to symbolize a pledge of affection. Shakespeare used this lore in “The Merchant of Venice.” In it, Leah gave a turquoise ring to Shylock when he was a bachelor, hoping it would win his affections so he would ask her to marry him.

Overwhelmed by praise? In 1890, art critic Albert Aurier wrote a very positive article about Vincent’s work in the literary magazine Mercure de France. But after Theo submitted Vincent’s paintings to a major exhibition in Paris, where his work was also well received, it all became too much for Vincent. ‘Please ask Mr Aurier not to write any more articles about my painting, tell him earnestly that first he is wrong about me, then that really I feel too damaged by grief to be able to face up to publicity.
