A word we hoped weโ€™d never have to say again, yet it became part of who we are.

Our paper cup design carries that story. Of the day our town moved, of homes left behind, and of how we learned to begin again.

As we mark the townsite relocation anniversary on 7th November, we remember not just the act of bakwit, but the strength it revealed in us.

Thatโ€™s the total income generated by Alangalangโ€™s creatives in 2024, from just 35 respondents across 21 barangays.

Itโ€™s proof that art, culture, and creativity are not just side activities. They already form a local economic engine.

Yet the same survey shows persistent barriers:

With this kind of contribution, the question becomes inescapable:

The Alangalang Creative Economy Data Brief calls for action: shared facilities, legal protections, and strong LGU and NGA interventions to harness this potential.

12.1 Million is only the beginning. The bigger story is what happens if we finally invest in our creatives.

Brandom Miralles Tingzon

Since 2010, Brandom has reshaped the digital landscape of Alangalang, quietly capturing institutional milestones and personal stories that define who we are as a town. From school events to LGU affairs, heโ€™s been the steady eye behind the lens, archiving our collective memory frame by frame.

Today, his work has taken him across five countries documenting the worldโ€™s biggest names in Egypt, UAE, Azerbaijan, and Morocco during international conferences, including the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

But perhaps Brandomโ€™s greatest impact lies closer to home. Many of Alangalangโ€™s rising graphic artists and video editors trace their roots back to his mentorship. Through them, digital media is becoming one of the silent yet growing economic lifelines of our town; proof that creativity, when nurtured, can put even a small town on the global map.

Whether you witnessed it in person or tuned in through the livestream, the inauguration ball in Alangalang today is more than a celebration. It brought to the fore tradition that has endured quietly but powerfully over the years. The ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’”๐’ ๐‘ซ๐’๐’ƒ๐’๐’† and ๐‘น๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’๐’… ๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’๐’๐’“, led by newly elected/ re-elected officials paired with their spouses or family members, remains a fixture of these civic ceremonies. It is a choreography of office, kinship, and public trust that has been part of Alangalang's political culture for several decades.

This eveningโ€™s performance carries the same ceremonial elegance once seen in inauguration balls of decades past. The steps, the formality, the deliberate pacing across the floor are gestures that speak not just to personal pride, but to a community's evolving sense of order and tradition. Each turn, each bow, is inherited from those who danced before, marking transitions of power with grace and continuity.

The photographs shown here, featuring former Municipal Councilors Leopoldo Verzosa Cabalona and his wife Rosario Matela Cabalona, come from an earlier chapter of this same narrative. What we see tonight is not a revival, but a sustained practice, quietly kept alive through the years, passed on not just in memory but in movement.

This image was unearthed as part of the archival efforts of the Alangalang Lingganay Performing Arts (ALPA). It will soon be on display at K.ape Cafรฉ & Bistro, alongside other rare photographs of Alangalanganons dancing through history. This is only a glimpse of what remains to be showcased.

Long after the music faded and the last dance step was taught, the work carried on.

In the past months, we began distributing the Impact Report of โ€œJota de Alangalang: An Pagtukib Folk Dance Workshopโ€ to educational leaders across Alangalang reaching university deans, school administrators, and district supervisors. These pages hold more than charts and photos. They carry the voices of our Alangalanganons, the cultural memory of a town, and a call to keep this legacy alive.

Because preservation doesn't end at performance. It begins when institutions and the people choose to care.

The Alangalang Lingganay Performing Arts (ALPA) formally handed over the Jota de Alangalang Impact Report to the LGU Alangalang, Leyte, reinforcing efforts to recognize the folk dance as an official cultural heritage of the town. The report, which details the outcomes of the Jota de Alangalang: An Pagtukib Folk Dance Workshop, provides key insights, policy recommendations, and a roadmap for sustaining cultural preservation efforts.

Municipal Planning and Development Officer Verwena Bibar emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, โ€œThe effort to promote Jota de Alangalang as an official dance reflects a deep appreciation for Alangalangโ€™s rich heritage. It is truly inspiring to see this initiative led by the young blood of Alangalang, as they work to preserve and celebrate the townโ€™s cultural traditions.โ€

The report highlights survey data, cultural insights, and policy recommendations, including the formal documentation of Jota de Alangalang, the institutionalization of cultural programs, and the integration of folk dance into education and community initiatives. With LGUโ€™s endorsement, the next steps involve advancing legislative support, securing partnerships, and strengthening mentorship programs to ensure that the legacy of Jota de Alangalang continues.

A Legacy Worth Fighting For

The original dancers of Jota de Alangalang fought for its recognition but never saw it published. Today, we take up where they left off.

Mrs. Rutchel Mandreza reminds us of their struggle, while Mrs. Corazon Ramos sees hope in ALPAโ€™s vision for the future. This is more than a danceโ€”itโ€™s a promise to continue what they started.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch how we are turning tradition into a lasting legacy.
