Returning to visit my friends at the 4 mile settlement in PNG. I was here filming for the documentary in 2017 during their election getting opinions from locals about their country and struggles. Some of the people moved away, some passed away, and some are still there. Life goes on, but they still recognized me on arrival as the doctor from the USA. My team didn’t believe that we could just walk into an impoverished community in the middle of a random pacific island nation nobody has heard of, but that’s the power of friendship. All it takes is making an effort and reaching out to get to know a stranger, regardless of their background and differences. Now my whole team has a home full of friends in Papua New Guinea whenever they wish to return.

Striking a bargain for pawpaw oil in a PNG market.

1 Kina = 0.26 USD

Average monthly salary for market vendors = 1800 Kina or $450

Estimated average monthly cost of living for a single person in PNG = 3400 Kina or $850 (https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Papua+New+Guinea)

Life is hard in PNG and they don’t earn enough to live and thrive, often suffering from poor living conditions, malnutrition, and high rates of crime due to poverty.

I ended up paying full price and didn’t feel bad about it. She needs it more than I do.

Buying betel nuts from locals in Papua New Guinea πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬. They chew and spit betel nuts for the medicinal properties but if you keep it in your mouth too long it can make you pass out quickly. I had it last time I was here in 2017 so I tried again to test my strength and failed miserably πŸ˜‚
