CALL FOR ENTRIES – PAPUA NEW GUINEA'S OFFICIAL SUBMISSION TO THE 99TH ACADEMY AWARDS (OSCARS®)

The Papua New Guinea Academy Awards Secretariat, under the National Culture Commission (NCC), is pleased to announce that the selection process for Papua New Guinea's Official Submission to the 99th Academy Awards (Best International Feature Film Category) will soon commence.

This is a historic opportunity for Papua New Guinea's filmmakers to showcase their stories on the world's biggest cinematic stage.

Screening Process Begins: 28 July 2026

Eligibility Highlights

✅ Feature film running over 40 minutes.
✅ More than 50% of the dialogue must be in a non-English language (with English subtitles).
✅ Must have received Censorship Board of PNG classification and certification.
✅ Must have had a commercial theatrical release in Papua New Guinea between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026.
✅ Must have screened commercially for a minimum of seven (7) consecutive days.
✅ Must be submitted in an approved Digital Cinema Package (DCP) or 35mm/70mm format.
✅ Must meet all Academy Awards technical and promotional requirements.

The true story of one of the first PNG missionaries - Adventist Pastor Taula Livovoa – and the hymn that helped bring peace 100 years ago to the bloodthirsty warriors of Mussau Island (160km north of Kavieng in New Ireland) is to be brought to the big screen!
The filmmakers behind last year's Sogeri-shot movie 'Papa Buka' – the first PNG film submitted for an Oscar – today announced shooting would start on 'Mussau: The First Song' on September 14 and continue for 5 weeks.
Indian film director Dr Biju Damodaran will work with PNG-based producer Parul Agrawal and executive producer Noelene Wunum of NAFA Productions, as well as a tight technical crew and hundreds of PNG actors and extras on the K14m project, which poses major logistical challenges as they move from remote Mussau Island across to Kainantu in the Highlands following in the footsteps of the courageous Pastor Taula.
