Bilas Design is a social initiative designed to promote shell-based handicrafts and artisans in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. There are more than 50 artisan households in the region producing traditional artefacts and contemporary jewellery. The artisans and their products can be seen at the Kavieng Craft Market, next to the main market on the waterfront, most Tuesdays - Saturdays. To he
lp support the developing shell-based handicraft industry, Bilas Design assists the National Fisheries College to deliver training workshops to local artisans. Workshops cover a range of topics from creative design, tool handling and use, to business skills. Individuals or community groups are welcome to contact Bilas Design regarding future participation in these activities. Bilas Design also helps support local artisans through the purchase and online resale of shell-based jewellery. As most artisans have limited access to internet, this introduces the artisan's work to a new and emerging marketplace. Online vending also provides a fantastic opportunity to share the beautiful New Ireland culture with people around the globe!
