Tanamalit Low Altitude Forest and Cave Systems
To a new visitor, this will be one of the adventurous places on Nissan Island to explore. The place is about 65 feet below ground level. It has a tropical rainforest that stretches to more than 200 meters . It is a place the locals rarely visit since the vegetation cover of the forest floor is quite unwelcoming with very rugged and slippery rocks and thick mosses and undergrowth. The forest floor is also misty, cold and humid. To visit the place, one has to wear protective gear, including coats, protective shoes and hand gloves.
Nevertheless, the flora and fauna of the place is very attractive, with different species of birds, insects and amphibians. The whistling, chirping and shrieking sounds of birds accompanied by flapping sounds of wings will make a new visitor visiting the forest feel like walking in a big tropical rain forest. The locals also said of a rare type of snake species that inhabits the forest. However, this usually hides in the tree tops as well as the thick undergrowth. It can only be seen if one walks very quietly.
Apart from the flora and fauna, there is a very attractive underground cave system located within the forest. Covered by fallen branches, leaves and twigs of the forest’s canopy, the depths of one of the caves cannot be clearly seen. However, walking over the twigs and branches of trees to reach the other cave is very risky and dangerous as one can sink straight into the middle of the cave once the twigs and fallen branches give way to the weight of one walking. The water remains icy cold and crystal clean. Yet can become murky if it is disturbed.
The two caves present themselves as two sites on Nissan Island that can be really loved by cave divers. The locals told of a Whiteman who visited and explored the caves. According to the Whiteman, the cave has a long expanse of underground tunnel that could lead to the sea or other parts of the island. Since he was exploring the cave himself, he did not explore further considering safety purposes.
