InterpreterLife Just sayin' what often we're thinkin'...

Hoping you enjoy them, too.

Since late 2018, I've enjoyed sharing my thoughts on the things dealt with every day as professional interpreters sketched out in silly cartoons I make while on the job.

There is a moment…
a very specific moment…
When your brain goes:
✨no✨
Not today.
And suddenly you’re fighting for your life trying to remember something BASIC like
“Marina de Guerra del Perú”

And your brain is like:
“Careful… don’t say Marines… that’s wrong…”
“Okay but then WHAT IS IT???”
“Good luck 😌”
So now I’m out here inventing terms like:
— the ocean army
— the water warriors
— THE BOAT PEOPLE
FULLY committed. No hesitation. No shame. Just vibes.
And the worst part?
You can’t even stop. You have to KEEP GOING like this is a completely normal thing a professional would say.
Anyway.
Communication was… interpreted.
Now it's YOUR TURN! What's the weirdest thing you've said? Made up words or explanations!
Gimme the good stuff 🤣😜

SOUND TECH SIGN LANGUAGE!!!

When the audio fails,
the speaker forgets the mic,
or someone asks a question from across the room…

We suddenly become fluent in:
- frantic gestures
- aggressive pointing
- full-body pantomime 😅

Interpreter survival mode: activated.

But today—on ASL Awareness Day—a reminder:
That’s improvisation.

Languages like American Sign Language are something else entirely.

Not backup. Not “gestures.”
They are complete, rich languages—
built for clarity, even in silence.

And in our world?
Communicating without sound isn’t a bonus.
It’s power.

So yes—we’ll keep wildly gesturing when everything falls apart 😅

But today also honors those who live and communicate in silence—fluently.

What’s your go-to emergency booth gesture?

“I don’t speak your language, but I’m going to try anyway.”

…we need to talk.

Interpreting is already a high-wire act when speakers are clear, structured, and working in their own language.
But when someone presents on a complex topic in a language they don’t actually speak?

It doesn’t make things more inclusive.
It makes things… unintelligible.

We’re suddenly decoding pronunciation, guessing intended words, reconstructing meaning on the fly—and sometimes, there’s just nothing solid to hold on to.

And the hardest part?
The audience doesn’t understand… and assumes it’s the interpreter.

This isn’t about effort or goodwill—it’s about effective communication.
If you want your message to land:
Speak your own language.
Let us do our job.

(And yes… today was one of those days. I did my best with a speaker reading Spanish off a page in an English accent, and I nearly cried. No one understood.)

Has this happened to you?
How do you handle it without throwing your headset across the booth? 😅

THOSE GIGS where they don't REALLY need you to do anything, but they won't accept not having you there. SO. FUN.

I’m SURE it’s throwing up red flags like Oprah!
Heavy artillery and how to use it?
Bull castration techniques?
Forensic medicine?!
I’m not the freak! My CLIENTS are! I need to learn the subject because of THEM! 😅🥹
What’s the weirdest (juiciest, most cringeworthy, reason for being followed, investigated and arrested by interpol) stuff you’ve ever googled for work? 🤩
Tell me everything!!! 🤩🤩🤩

“I don’t speak your language but I’m going to try anyway”
WE NEED TO DO A MASS INTERVENTION. It’s already a challenging job to simultaneously interpret for “normal” speakers but you want to try and make a presentation on a difficult subject in a language that’s not yours???? WHY?!?!?!?! you’re not doing anybody but your own ego a favor!
STICK TO YOUR OWN LANGUAGE AND LET US FO OUR JOB!
Sorry for venting with you guys, I just did my best with an English speaker attempting to read in Spanish and I nearly cried. Nobody understood
Has this happened to you? What are we supposed to do??

International interpreter appreciation day!
You’re welcome!!! (To all the imaginary clients that follow me)
I didn’t know this day existed until like 10 mins ago because somebody used the tag 😜 to post this and I think it’s pretty awesome that it does exist so, just sharing with you guys 😍🥳
Happy interpreter appreciation day, we make people understand each other by being that bridge, that weirdly cabled brain we have is what helps so many. Mad props guys, happy day!
