Lifer #1393 - the Purple-throated Euphonia photographed at Waqanki Lodge in Moyobamba, Peru.

Waqanki is an incredible birding hotspot with over 700 species recorded on eBird, and the feeders and gardens were constantly buzzing with activity from euphonias, tanagers, hummingbirds, and more.

The Purple-throated Euphonias were some of the most common birds around the lodge, and this individual gave me one of my favorite photo opportunities of the trip. It landed beside a yellow tinted leaf that blended perfectly into the background, creating these warm golden tones that really made the bird stand out.

A beautiful species, an unforgettable setting, and another incredible addition to the life list.

I recently discovered a new favorite birding hotspot in Sequim, Washington and have been visiting monthly to capture the action as spring migration ramps up.

When I arrived last month and pulled my car to the side of the road, the first thing I heard was the distinctive buzz and chirp of a Rufous Hummingbird doing his flight display. It didn’t take long to locate this small neon orange fuzz as he moved from sapling to sapling chasing other hummingbirds in the area. I found some native flowers and camped out to see if he’d stop by, which paid off with the first two images in the series.

Which perch is your favorite? Image number 3 is a close second for me as my goal was to capture more of what the landscape looked like in the background.

Blue-tailed Emerald photographed at Waqanki Lodge in Moyobamba, Peru. These hummingbirds were near impossible to track as they zipped between flowers throughout the gardens, it took some patience to finally line everything up for a clean frame at 500mm.

I included the before-and-after edit for this image as well as I think it’s a great way to show the process behind the final image and how a scene translates from the field to the finished edit. My goal with editing is always to stay true to the moment and preserve how the bird and light actually looked in person. As always, it’s best to get the cleanest shot you can in-camera, but as most photographers know the RAW file always comes out looking flat - designed to be adjusted in post to pull the full detail.

Snowy Egret photographed along the coast near Lima, Peru. This was from the first day of a 10-day birding trip, starting with a solo morning exploring a remote beach lined with thousands of terns, gulls, and shorebirds. The egrets were some of my favorite subjects, constantly moving along the shoreline and running in and out of the waves while hunting.

Snowy Egrets are known for this active feeding style, often ‘dancing’ through the water to stir up prey, which makes them especially fun to photograph. The last frame in this set was a bit of a happy accident that ended up working well in black and white.

Rufous-crested Coquettes sharing a few words at the Waqanki Lodge hummingbird gardens in Peru.

I recently returned from a 10 day intensive birding trip, encompassing hundreds of miles and nearly 400 species throughout the Moyobamba region in Peru. We photographed everything from illusive Little Tinamou to rare Ochraceous-breasted Flycatchers and numerous endemics.

Our first day started off with a blur of color at the Waqanki Lodge hummingbird feeders, where we saw these charismatic and chaotic Rufous-crested Coquettes. The next 9 days filled 1 terabyte on my hard drive, and are some of the best bird photos I’ve taken in my life. I’ll be posting most of them to my website, and sharing a couple of my favorites on socials.

A few more favorite frames from a recent trip to Phoenix in January.

Cactus Wrens have quickly become one of my favorite birds to photograph. Not only do they sport a complex plumage pattern and striking red eye, the landscape they call home is another level of photogenic.

Slide # 3 was a major lifer for me on this trip. Do you know what it is?

Story behind the image:

Anna’s Hummingbird from a cold, foggy morning in Kent, Washington. This bird stayed perched, hesitant to move in the cold. After the sun finally came through the fog, this stunning hummer took a big stretch, and I held down the shutter, catching the morning light hitting its gorget and a brief wing stretch.

Story behind the image:
Cactus Wren photographed outside of Phoenix, Arizona. This bird spent the morning hopping between Fishhook Barrel Cactus, glowing red in the early light. Instead of front-lighting the bird, I leaned into the silhouette as the sun came up behind it, which really brought out the color and texture of the cactus and made for a completely different look. A fun way to start 2026. After I first saw this species in Tucson, Arizona last year, Cactus Wrens have quickly become one of my favorite birds to photograph. It’s always a treat to photograph these birds amongst the vibrant cacti - and I’m excited to keep building out my portfolio for this species in the eBird Macaulay Library.
