1982 Machu Pitcchu, stairs. Having the place virtually to myself I took time to make various images. Machu Picchu, on top of a mountain and surrounded by the Urubamba on three sides it was obviously a very strategically placed city.

Machu Picchu. I arrived earlier on this day on the tourist train which in 1982 was about the only way to get there easily. Most people (maybe 200 in total) visited for the day returning to Cuzco on the train about four hours later. I was sitting here watching the sun going down and completely alone when I heard a couple of American voices ‘ hey, doesn’t that look like Tony sitting there’. It was Garry and Barbara ( of Cajamarca fame ) appearing after a four day hike along the Inca trail. The following day, Garry, myself and Bob, another American decided to climb the Inca steps to the top of Huayna Picchu which we managed in twenty minutes.

Inca Fortress at Pisac, in 1982 I spent two hours completely alone here. The site features the most precise Inca stonework I have seen. Huge stones interlocking together with no mortar. In a country that has a lot of tremors and earthquakes the design and construction used by the Incas meant that their structures survived whereas the buildings built by their colonial masters often didn’t.

Looking back to Nevado Coropuna. The other side of the snowy peaks in the distance is my departure point of Andagua. I had the only vehicle in the town, my fuel was running low, Jerry cans empty, the climb up over the pass was using the last drops and I was being to regret the extra weight of the passenger that I had agreed to give a lift to. From the high point I managed to freewheel for over 100km and reached a service station.

Cabanaconde, Condor. Soaring on its way to the coast.
I often saw them on deserted beaches, I tried to get close by approaching from upwind of them as they are so awkward on the ground that they need a headwind to take off but they are extremely wary when on the ground and would fly away before I could get close. On one occasion whilst driving very slowly along an empty stretch of the Pan American Highway, a glance in my mirror revealed a Condor soaring the slipstream of the VW off to one side, similar to they way sea birds soar ships.
Jerry McGahan (1943-2016) of the University of Wisconsin wrote a fascinating paper on the study of the Andean Condor in 1972.

Altiplano Near Orcapampa. I drove away from the dirt road to camp and it went down to -16c that night. The following morning I was stuck. The altitude and the cold had got to the Beetle so I was settling down for a long wait for the temperature to rise and hopefully getting the engine started when I heard and saw a shepherd approaching with some llamas. An interesting conversation ensued which went something like; Where are you from?...Lima...No where are you really from? ..oh, England...,Where’s that? .. oh it’s a long way, across an ocean....Where’s your boat? ...I came by aeroplane....ah yes I know what they are, how long did it take to get here? ....About eighteen hours...Huh, that’s not far!!!
Followed by me asking; I’m stuck, will you help me push this to the road, then if someone comes they will help me get started? ..,sure.
And he did, I blocked the road, an hour later a truck stopped and a bump start got me on my way.

Near Chilcaymarca, a Quechua woman relaxing in a sunny corner. At around 4000 meters a.s.l. I asked her if it wasn’t a terribly cold place to live, she replied that due to the underground thermal waters, in places in didn’t get too cold.

Whilst in the pueblo of Cabanaconde this group of enthusiastic children had just come out of school and insisted on being photographed. I’ve often looked at this picture taken in 1982 and wondered how their lives have progressed.
I am extremely grateful to the Peruvian Ambassador in London, His Excellency Juan Carlos Gamarra who kindly sent a copy of my book Peru1982 which features this picture, to the Major of Cabanaconde.

In what felt like the middle of nowhere high up on the Altiplano I encountered these two wonderful if rather shy Aymara women who agreed to be photographed. There was no obvious place they had come from or were going too and communicating was difficult and mostly involved giggles.

The Journey Down, I had been briefed in Lima and told what to expect however I didn’t realise the journey down would be quite so memorable. I had allowed six hours but in the event it took considerably less time, as I descended I stopped to eat refreshing cactus fruit, easy to get at if you have leather gloves. As I descended further it got warmer and the vegetation became lush and hummingbirds wizzed around me enquiringly.
