Creative Rights for Creative People - An Introduction to Artist's Resale Royalty

Curious about copyright? One of the challenges we creative people face is that common knowledge of copyright is sometimes at variance with the actual law, leading to misunderstandings, infringements and confusion. Let's talk about knowing and protecting our rights, why they exist and the cultural and financial value of our work and rights. We'll also discuss users’ privileges, and understand how to determine infringement.

The new Resale Royalty for Visual Artists legislation comes into force in December, and we need to understand how this will be enacted, and what it means for us.

In this engaging session, presented by Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) and Resale Royalties Aotearoa, Karen Workman will be giving us an overview of our rights as creators, building our basic understanding of Copyright and using that information to build stronger artistic business practices.

EVENT UPDATE – 13/12/21

Creative Northland has made the decision to postpone the 2022 Whangārei Sculpture Symposium event to 2024. This is due to resourcing constraints and the uncertainty of what operation in the new COVID-19 Protection Framework looks like for this event. Given more time Creative Northland will be able to facilitate more thorough planning and secure higher level of resourcing for Whangārei Sculpture Symposium 2024. We appreciate your understanding.

Creative Northland will be hosting two face to face consultations on a 10 year arts, culture and heritage strategy for Far North. One in Kaikohe on the 29th November and one in Kaeo on the 30th.

The feedback you provide helps us to develop the vision and goals for this strategy (which we are doing on behalf of Far North District Council) and gives us an opportunity to assess the past and present activity in the region and what its future development should be.

To register for one of these events email [email protected]

Both events will be following current covid guidelines therefore participants are asked to scan or sign in, 1m distancing and mask wearing when possible.

Please note that consultation will continue in the new year so if you are unable to join us next week, we will have more opportunities in the future.

Creative Northland congratulates the Minister of Culture and Heritage Carmel Sepuloni, and her Ministry of Culture and Heritage in there reprioritising of funds to Creative New Zealand and other cultural bodies. Though these funds will be contestable funding it gives our at risk organisations, key infrastructure, artists, sole-traders, creatives and projects choices. It is encouraging to know there is future-focused fund aimed at providing certainty for performances and events that are the backbone of our local communities.

This will help Creative NZ to:
➡️ increase the budget for their Arts Grants programme (decisions on upcoming rounds notified 22 Oct and 4 Dec 2021)
➡️ increase the budget for their Annual Arts Grants programme (decisions notified 1 Oct 2021)
➡️ increase the amount of resilience funding for at-risk organisations in their investment programmes (with the fund to open from mid-Oct 2021)
➡️ increase funding for the Creative Communities Scheme (by distributing additional funds to territorial authorities by the end of 2021 to support local arts activities).

Along with Creative NZ, Manatu Taonga will provide relief to support organisations, including sole traders. More information on that here: https://mch.govt.nz/covid-19-delta-relief-funding
