Now retired from his long career as an electrician, on a rainy day, he can usually be found in his man cave, turning op-shop-sourced household utensils into earrings, rings, and pendants or finely polishing small pieces of ancient swamp Kauri-creating earrings.

He also makes pendants and larger ornamental hooks and patu’s, each a treasure with its beautiful grain enhanced from thousands of years buried in the peat swamps of Northland.

He is always delighted to hear that one of his pieces has been purchased for a unique corporate gift.

Garment racks formed from twisted rebar rod seen throughout the gallery and the large tapestry loom and counter are further examples of his creativity.

Introducing Monica Krey

The BACH - Open 7 days, Town Basin, Whangārei.

Shop local. Strengthen our community — Choose Northland art.

Monica originates from South Africa but has been living in NZ for 20 years. Her love affair with pottery started over 30 years ago.

She started her craft in the early 90s doing three years of intensive study with Sheryl Duncan a South African potter.

She started off mainly making figurative work and then moved into developing her own glazes and realised there was a real market for tableware and functional art.

She now has a home studio where she creates all her pieces from start to finish.

From slabs of clay she forms each unique piece, decorates with glazes she has developed over many years and then fires them in her own kiln.

Introducing Sam Morton

The BACH - Open 7 days, Town Basin, Whangārei.

Shop local. Strengthen our community — Choose Northland art.

Sam is a born and bred Kiwi artist living in the Far North. Originally from the Bay of Plenty, he has called the north home for the past 13 years.

After spending some time living and working in Australia, Sam decided to return home for family in 2011. Working from home has allowed him to spend more time with his family and interact directly with his customers, especially those who want to create their own custom dream pieces.

Sam's craft involves creating fish from stainless steel using a variety of techniques that have evolved over time, including grinding, cutting, heating, painting, and shaping the metal.

He began with flatter, one-dimensional artwork and has since progressed to creating multilayered schools of fish and single fish with intricate shapes and colours.

The process starts with cutting the fish using a laser cutter. Sam then grinds the fish to add texture and movement before moving on to painting or heating to achieve the desired colour effects. The fish are then rolled and bent into shape and finally sprayed for a glossy finish.

Jo May is an established artist living in Whangārei.

Mostly self-taught, Jo May began painting when she was 16.

She now specialises in silk painting - mainly due to a love of the free- flow painting style, but also the vivid colours and texture silk allows.

“ I love Northland and am inspired by the beauty of our coves and rock formations out at The Heads. I love the distinctive shapes of those hills - so recognisable. I also enjoy painting native birds - so may colours and unique to NZ.”

Both originals and prints are available at The Bach in assorted sizes as well as a good selection of block mounted prints, greeting cards, magnetic notepads, and bookmarks.

Introducing Amanda Keir

After a life-threatening diagnosis Amanda’s husband built a studio out of an old Kauri launch in their beautiful garden. One day, picking up some pens and pencils and starting to draw, Amanda found herself in a mindful place being completely absorbed, immersing into the creation on the page, feeling very at peace.

Amanda works with mixed media, but pen and pencil gives her greater control over her work which suits her personality. Amanda gains inspiration and colour combinations from nature and their beautiful garden.

With her passion for art rekindled Amanda has returned to making copper and glass jewellery and drawing and painting with a variety of media.
