Recent arrival | Summer Breeze by Lyndy Wilson

Summer Breeze has recently arrived at Art by the River.

With its warm palette, flowing forms and unmistakable style, this large painting is a wonderful example of Lyndy's figurative work. The relaxed pose and rich colours give the piece a calm, summery feel, while the geometric composition keeps the eye moving across the canvas.

Summer Breeze is available to view in the gallery and online.

We're delighted to welcome Bruce McLachlan to Art by the River.

Based in Hamilton, Bruce is an established New Zealand artist whose work spans striking portraiture, realism and contemporary subjects. With a background as a signwriter, his technical skill and attention to detail are immediately recognisable, whether he's painting an iconic face or finding beauty in everyday moments.

Bruce has exhibited widely, created many of Hamilton's best-known murals, and we're pleased to now represent his work in Whanganui.

We look forward to introducing more of Bruce's paintings over the coming weeks.

Welcome to Art by the River, Bruce!

Just arrived at Art by the River.

Itinerants 3 by Annie McIver is a handbuilt black clay sculpture and winner of the 2020 Waitākere Arts Trust Sculpture Award.

Inspired by the experience of displacement, the work brings together Annie's distinctive figurative style with a quiet sense of narrative. It is one of several powerful ceramic sculptures now available at the gallery.

View Itinerants 3 online or visit us in Whanganui to see it in person.

A warm welcome to Carol Readman, whose work has just arrived at Art by the River.

Middle Ground with Swimmers and Cricketers is our first painting by this established New Zealand artist, whose expressive watercolours have been admired for more than 40 years.

Rather than recording every detail of a landscape, Carol paints its essence. Here, memories of a New Zealand summer emerge through luminous colour, flowing forms and small figures that hint at stories without ever telling them completely.

We're delighted to have Carol's work in the gallery and look forward to introducing more of her paintings in the future.

New arrival — Night Songs by Dean Raybould

Some artworks seem to have their own soundtrack.

Night Songs by Dean Raybould weaves together music, nature and imagination in a richly layered composition. An owl keeps watch, a guitar stands quietly at its centre, and a huia, shapes and symbols drift through the night like echoes of a familiar melody.

Dean's paintings are wonderfully individual, inviting each viewer to find their own story within them.

New arrival — The Space Between 2 by Julie Whyman

There is a quiet stillness to this beautiful new circular work by Julie Whyman.

Two kingfishers occupy the same space, connected yet separate, poised in that fleeting moment between arrival and departure. Julie's layered approach to colour and form creates a wonderful sense of atmosphere, with luminous blues and soft golden light drawing the eye across the composition.

Thoughtful, elegant and unmistakably Julie.

Just arrived — Urban Bloom by Lyndy Wilson

Bold florals meet contemporary design in this striking work by Lyndy Wilson.

Set against a calm, pared-back interior, the geometric bouquet bursts with colour and personality. The crisp striped jug adds a playful touch, while Lyndy's distinctive style transforms an everyday arrangement into something fresh and unexpected.

A beautiful piece that bridges still life and modern living.

Now available at Art by the River.

Very sad to hear of the passing of the iconic and pioneering David Hockney. A fellow Yorkshireman, he constantly embraced new technologies and explored fresh ways to realise his vision – from printmaking and photography to iPad drawings in his later years.

As well as leaving behind an extraordinary body of work, his life is a reminder that there is no age limit on innovation, curiosity, or creativity.

We're delighted to welcome Gina O'Grady to the Art by the River family.

An Auckland-based artist, Gina draws inspiration from New Zealand's extraordinary landscapes and the tramping experiences that connect us to them. Her paintings often feature iconic backcountry huts – places of shelter, achievement and shared memories in the outdoors.

This beautiful work, Waimakariri Falls Hut, captures one of New Zealand's best-loved alpine huts, its vivid red form standing proudly amongst tussock grasslands and the rugged peaks of Arthur's Pass National Park. Through layers of luminous acrylic colour, Gina brings to life not just the landscape itself, but the unique character of these special places.

We look forward to introducing more of Gina's work in the coming weeks.
