‘Whakatāne, Kiwi Capital of the World™’

Kiwi, our iconic national bird, literally live in our backyards in Whakatāne. Residents and visitors to the area have the unique opportunity to walk into the bush and step into kiwi territory. This exceptional set of circumstances has led to recognition of Whakatāne as the ‘Kiwi Capital of the World™’. Now, thanks to artist Dr. Liz Grant, 10 new kiwi have c

ome to call Whakatāne home! The Kiwi Wandering Project aims to raise awareness about the proximity of kiwi to our township and provide a fun, educational activity for families, schools, and visitors to Whakatāne.

FYI 🙌

A tad late in getting the news out there, but late last year we were thrilled to have the return of our beloved Ōhope statue back in its rightful home, along the Kiwi Wandering Trail.

A massive thank you goes to John Pullar for organising getting the statue fixed and to Liz Grant the creator and now fixer of this beautiful piece!

Has anyone seen this missing bronze kiwi sculpture?!!! Beautiful 'Ōhope' has been stolen from its location outside the BOP Regional Council Building on Quay Street. This sculpture was kindly sponsored by the Regional Council and forms part of the 'Kiwi Wandering Trail' - a free, interactive art trail that belongs to the Whakatāne Community. If you know anything that might help us track this kiwi down - please let us know. We just want him back!!! 😭

*EDIT: Miro has been handed into the police! We are so thankful to have our kiwi back. There is a bit of damage to the leg, so will take time to fix and reinstall. Thank you everyone for your support

Unfortunately our little kiwi friend Miro has been taken from their spot on our Kiwi Wandering Trail. We are hoping to find where they are, but for now please take note if you are doing the trail.
