Stumpwork

Stumpwork embroidery is a historic, three-dimensional hand embroidery style that lifts figures, petals, and objects off the background fabric to look sculptural. Originating in 17th-century England and first called raised work, it uses padding, wire cores, and needlelace to create dynamic textures.

🧵 Technique Tuesdays 🧵

French knot

A French knot is a classic embroidery stitch used to create small raised dots, flower centers, or textured fills. It is performed by bringing the needle up through the fabric, wrapping the thread around the needle a few times, and re-inserting the needle right next to the original entry point while holding the tail taut.
