So many of us started getting noticed because of aria competitions and they funded our overseas travel and study. Go support these young singers at the 2022 Aria Finals if you can!

At around 10pm tonight, our esteemed adjudicator Madeleine Pierard will select 8 finalists from 28 competitors in the preliminary round. The finals are Sunday 21 August at St. Andrews on the Terrace at 7pm - it is always an amazing evening showcasing the extraordinary operatic talent we have in Aotearoa.

What self-respecting woman in 2022 would sing Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben? Um, hi šŸ‘‹ I would. Yes it feels out-dated and anti-feminist - a lot has changed since 1840! ...or has it? This song cycle is sumptuous, heartfelt and unashamedly Romantic, and to write it off as obsolete is just too easy. Let's start a conversation about it instead.

The future of opera? Collaboration, New Zealand stories, New Zealand creatives, a sense of family and unconditional support for each other - this project will be a highlight of my career. I’m honoured to be standing here with Anna Leese Soprano and Kenneth Young.

We celebrate this place where we stand, where we share music, and where our stories continue to unfold.

Wellington-born and Wairarapa-bred Georgia is a singer of classical and musical theatre repertoire, teacher, translator, diction coach and librettist.

ā€œFor the first time in my life, I was able to write the libretto first and then hand the entire work to the composer. I love that Ken took my words, spoke them aloud, noted where the syllables fell and then wrote the music for those words. He paid them such attention and valued them so much, which was an incredible gift for me, and for the two women singing the piece. This opera is the ultimate collaborative work between writer, composer and performers.ā€

The Strangest of Angels premieres in Christchurch on 27 and 28 May.
