ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: PAPA M / DAVID PAJO

Few musicians have travelled as widely through the American underground as David Pajo. Best known as the guitarist behind Slint and their landmark album Spiderland, Pajoโ€™s influence stretches far beyond post-rock. Across decades heโ€™s moved through Tortoise, The For Carnation, King Kong, Gang of Four and collaborations with Will Oldham, while continually finding new ways to reshape guitar music.

Under the names Papa M, Aerial M and his own name, Pajo has built an extraordinary solo catalogue that moves between fragile acoustic pieces, lo-fi experimentation, post-hardcore, metal, blues and improvised instrumental music. Albums including Whatever, Mortal, Pajo, Highway Songs and A Broke Moon Rises reveal an artist who has never been interested in staying in one musical world for long.

His latest Papa M release, Ballads of Harry Houdini, draws those different threads together. Improvisation sits alongside flashes of Slintโ€™s darkness, Tortoise-like experimentation, blues, dub, post-punk and the intimate guitar work that has defined his solo recordings. It feels less like looking back than Pajo pulling decades of musical experience apart and rebuilding it in the present.

Always restless, curious and beautifully difficult to categorise, David Pajo is one of underground musicโ€™s great musical explorers, an artist whose work helped shape post-rock while continuing to push well beyond it.

KARRIEM RIGGINS
Detroit-born drummer, producer and beatmaker Karriem Riggins has spent decades moving effortlessly between jazz improvisation and hip-hop beat science. One of the most respected musicians of his generation, his credits include Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots and Madlib, alongside a close creative kinship with the late J Dilla. His music is loose, instinctive and deeply rhythmic, built around the kind of feel that canโ€™t be programmed.

LIV.E
Dallas-born, LA-based singer, songwriter, rapper and producer Liv.e has built her own beautifully unpredictable corner of contemporary R&B. Across acclaimed releases including Couldnโ€™t Wait to Tell Youโ€ฆ, Girl in the Half Pearl and PAST FUTUR.e, she bends soul, jazz, hip-hop and experimentation into something raw, intimate and entirely her own. Her smoky, elastic vocals move between singing and rap with a freedom that makes every performance feel alive in the moment.

As GENA, short for โ€œGod Energy, Naturally Amazingโ€, Liv.e and Karriem Riggins bring those two creative worlds together. Their debut album The Pleasure Is Yours is a warm, playful conversation between kindred improvisers, pairing Liv.eโ€™s free-flowing vocals with Rigginsโ€™ rich, unpredictable percussion. Analog and ethereal, soulful and experimental, GENA draw from jazz, hip-hop and R&B while refusing to settle into any one genre, creating music built on instinct, vulnerability and the chemistry of two artists finding a new language together.

๐ŸŒŸ Artist spotlight: Danny Rankin (also known as the one and only DJ Decoy) is a formative member of the legendary Kurupt FM and has been instrumental in bringing UK garage to the BBC and big screen over the past decade.

A cold selector and producer in his own right, Rankin is increasingly known for rapturously received sets up and down the country, mixing seamlessly from old-skool classics to cutting-edge sonics at the forefront of the UK bass continuum. Segues into everything from dancehall to classic RnB have solidified his reputation as a true selector, with exclusive MC Grindah dubplate specials taking things up a notch further.
