Our programme, ICONIC TUNES – musings of musical moments in space and time, features a vibrant mix of favourites, plus a special treat: two outstanding soloists from within the orchestra — An Pham and Hamish Harrison.

🎼 Meet Christiaan van der Zee – Music Director of the Wellington Youth Sinfonietta! 🎶

Christiaan is a professional violist, passionate music educator, and maths teacher with a rich background in music performance and youth development. Trained in South Africa, Wellington, Germany, and the USA, he was a founding member of the award-winning Tasman String Quartet, who competed internationally and toured with Chamber Music New Zealand.

In addition to leading the Wellington Youth Sinfonietta as Music Director, Christiaan wears many hats:
🎻 Principal Viola of Orchestra Wellington
🎶 Regular performer with the NZSO
📚 Dedicated secondary school maths teacher
💙 Founder of Karori Classics, a chamber music series supporting local charities

Christiaan has a deep love for working with young musicians and has specialised in youth ensemble and orchestra training since 2012. His energy, experience, and leadership continue to inspire the next generation of performers in Aotearoa.
