Last day for Transcendence exhibition is coming up! This show de-installs on Monday evening, so come catch it in all it's glory before it's all gone!

My euphoria does not come from gender, as I have none. But more from the joy of getting to create and discover myself more and more each day. Labels I find too rigid for what an ever evolving landscape I find myself, so I don't box myself in, but rather embrace the fact that I am, and always will be, a work in progress.

Selkie, acrylic on canvas

Between two worlds, but belonging to both.

I'm a selkie. I love to connect with humans, even though their world isn't made for me. I also love exploring the world where I can be my freest, a natural world now hidden because of what people have made.

To live as a selkie, I've had to grow strong, strong enough to keep myself safe from people wanting to take my skin, but also strong enough to stay gentle and nurture a peaceful life.

It might seem easier to discard part of myself, stay a human, or stay a seal. But I'm neither - also, I'm both. I learn to love every part of myself, I'm a selkie and I explore these worlds as me.

Battle Armour for Soft-hearted Boys, mixed fabrics, lace and ribbon

For boys who are gentle, with hearts full of sugar, who sleep with sweet dreams and they're heads in the clouds. The world can be cruel. This Armour saved me, from a life of hiding away from monsters, under pillows and blankets. Every boy lucky enough to be adorned with this armour will have every wish of his come true.

Femininity and masculinity do not sit as opposites with one being the absence of another. When first exploring my gender identity, I was under the impression I had to perform as masculine as possible and cut ties with the things that I deemed made me female. 'Carmen' allows me to re-explore and reclaim the feminine and a part of my youth within a q***r lense.

Self Portrait 1, acrylic paint on canvas

For me this artwork had been less about the final result and instead just the endeavour taken to paint an actual self-portrait. Of course, the image had to be a little meaningful, it came to my head and I felt it encapsulates my current thoughts of me being defined by artistic creation, of my current identity as an “alien” in Aotearoa, and some feelings about my own cultural identity as q***r person flourishing the freedoms of a different place. Yet on the other hand, it’s meant to be a little silly and humorous. I’d bought my shirt in Singapore at a Giordano menswear store, it says “real man” in informal Simplified Chinese. It’s just my favourite shirt, soft and gender-f**ky. It’s not a perfect painting but I created it, and there is something precious in it.

Transcendence displays a collection of artwork from local trans and Takatāpui artists that express their sense of joy and pride in finding or creating their identity and sense of self.

Breaking the boundaries of the gender binary in a multitude of ways, this exhibition celebrates that individuality.

Every journey is unique, every journey is important, every journey is beautiful.

More than my body, hand sculpted marionette puppet

Puppets exist in a space between worlds, they are seen but not fully understood until the puppeteer breathes life into them. This Marionette is a self portrait, reflecting how I have always felt like I belong in the space in between, and that my body is something separate from who I really am.

Everyone I met as a child could hear the buzzing thing that was hiding under my messy curls, my crooked attempts at eyeliner, my grass stayed dresses. At recess I would lift rocks and poke through waterlogged rain gutters to greet my sisters. My family never understood what I was, but they helped pry open my molt to find the odd, charming thing they'd raised.

FishCube presents: THE MACHINE REFUSES

A solo exhibition by Ethan Sheaf Morrison, winner of our Winter Open Call.

Opening 7th August — join us from 6pm.

‘Created by Ethan Sheaf-Morrison, The Machine Refuses is a survey of the extents of computational rendering, exploring what happens when the extremes of our world push technology past its usability.

Antarctica is one of those extremes. Because imagery of the continent is sparse and coarse, the computational tool assembles a landscape out of whatever captures exist. What looks like a single view is actually a run of satellite passes taken years apart by different sensors, in different seasons, and under different light, stitched together and presented as one moment. Each seam marks a join between two different times the machine has treated as one.’

Matt Jordan’s ‘A Body Of Work’ will now be showing at FishCube till the end of the month! Pop by between 10am-5pm on Dixon Street to view the exhibition!

Matt Jordan’s ‘A Body of Work’ will be running this week at Fishcube from 10-5pm.

‘In a world obsessed with convenience and shortcuts, Matt chooses to swim against the current. He goes to extraordinary lengths to create complex, narrative-driven compositions from scratch. If a design requires someone falling, he creates the scenario, perhaps with a trampoline. If combat is needed, he arranges staged fights with larping armour. If a wolf attack is called for, he may organise an protection dog training exercise. For Matt, anything is possible when one is willing to invest the necessary time and effort.’

Catch this exhibition during a rainy Wellington day and marvel at the large scale delights , reflecting Jordan’s tattoo work.

The fantastic David Tremont exhibition will open TOMORROW at FishCube - model display storytelling and ‘quirky robots.’ 🤖

‘David Tremont brings his meticulously crafted world of model-making to Fishcube Gallery, on show 29 May–23 June. Step into an imaginative showcase of more than 50 hand-built models spanning the last decade of his practice. On view is a range of large-scale vehicles, a constellation of quirky robots, and more from Tremont’s self-published books and vivid imagination. Come up close to the textures, engineering and storytelling embedded in every build, and see how everyday materials transform into vehicles, characters and scenes that spark inspiration to create.’
