Ngā Whanaunga is the name of our shorts section, and this year we have 14 incredible short films coming to a cinema near you!
PLUS we’ll also be screening a section of shorts dedicated to the amazing work from A Wave in the Ocean - a year-long filmmaking intensive programme developed by Dame Jane Campion and Philippa Campbell.

What would you do if a simple slip changed your life in seconds? That’s just part of the incredible story in My Humble Friend, Fonotī Pati Umaga, which joins the NZIFF 2026 Māhutonga lineup.

The 1988 hit single ‘Sweet Lovers’ made musician and social justice advocate Fonotī Pati Umaga a star. Fast forward to 2005, a slip in the shower left him paralysed from the neck down. After a long period of depression and soul-searching, Pati emerged with a new purpose, infusing a message of disability awareness into music to create his greatest advocacy work yet.

🎬Be Merry - a deeply personal account of childhood in 80s NZ, directed by Wellington-based filmmaker Gwen Isaac.
🎬In Search of My Moehau - an absurd, Blair Witch Project-style mockumentary that ventures deep into the NZ bush.

🐊What happens when a legendary NZ documentary-maker turns her lens on the Nigerian teens building sci-fi worlds from scratch?🐊

Crocodile follows a group called The Critics - brothers, sisters and cousins from Kaduna who craft magical, futuristic movies on a phone, with homemade props and flickering electricity. So far, they've clocked up more than 110k followers on YouTube, with actor Morgan Freeman among their many fans.

NZ filmmaker Pietra Brettkelly spent 7 years with the group, capturing their raw energy and wild imagination. The incredible result is Crocodile, making it's long-awaited run at NZIFF 2026 after its premiere at Berlin Film Fest and a big win at Tribeca Festival. Another one you’ve been waiting for, Fatherland is joining the NZIFF 2026 lineup!
Paweł Pawlikowski scooped the prestigious Best Director award at Cannes for this one, and you won’t want to miss it.

The film follows Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika, an actress, writer, and rally driver, as they climb into a black Buick in the summer of 1949 and drive straight into the past. From US-occupied Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, their road trip through a Germany in ruins forces a reckoning not just with a shattered country, but with the fractures running through their own family…

One actor, two head-turning Cannes hits… is Alexis Manenti the new ‘it’ guy you may not have heard of?!

As the star of French films Too Many Beasts and Flesh and Fuel, both award-winners at Cannes and both coming to NZIFF 2026, you’ll soon be seeing more of him on a cinema screen near you.

Oddball, action-packed dark comedy Too Many Beasts tells the tale of a tiny French town dealing with a wild boar problem, while drama-romance Flesh and Fuel takes a ride-along with q***r truck drivers. Details at nziff.co.nz!

Joining the list for NZIFF 2026… we have psychological thriller Everytime, winner of the Cannes Un Certain Regard section, crime drama/slow-burn Western, The Dreamed Adventure, which scooped the prestigious Jury Prize at Cannes, and All of a Sudden, the latest from Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi and another Cannes highlight - leads Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto jointly won the award for Best Actress.

In today’s Cannes picks, two French debuts that knocked the socks off some of the world’s best critics - La Gradiva, and Goodbye Cruel World, both joining the Fresh strand at NZIFF 2026!

🎬La Gradiva - Winner, Cannes Critics Prize
On a class trip to Italy, it’s dramas, desires and teenage angst galore… but this film is far more than your usual movie about high school students. ‘Perceptive’, ‘unflinchingly honest’ ‘completely absorbing’ and ‘stunning’ are just some of the words industry experts have used to describe this one, with cinematographer-turned-director Marine Atlan hailed as one to watch.

🎬Goodbye Cruel World - Cannes Critic’s Week closing film
Described as “a coming-of-age film with a gorgeous twist”, the story follows a mercilessly bullied and depressed teenage runaway who develops a romance with an equally lonely former classmate. Together, the pair plot an ambitious cross-country escape plan.
The movie’s multi-talented director Félix de Givry also co-wrote the animated film Arco, coming to NZIFF’s Wonderland strand.
