For the final week of the year the Gallery will host a suite of new works on paper by Christina Pataialii. “Notes,” invites viewers into a world of small-scale works on paper that explore shifts in material, scale, and painterly technique.

All of the works reference a memory or moment from Christina’s past, places she lived, places she visited, from Piha, to New Lynn and out to Murawai. There is an intimacy in the scale of these works, they are tenderly painted fragments of past memory. These works are ‘Balmoral’, ‘Piha’ and ‘Waikumete’ all acrylic on paper 2024.

The show will run from 11am Tuesday the 16th of December to 3pm Saturday 21st of December 2024.

The Gallery will reopen on Wednesday the 15th of January 2025

“Notes”, new works on paper from Christina Pataialii, one week only 17th ~21 December💥 . Christina Pataialii’s latest series, “Notes,” invites viewers into a world of small-scale works on paper that explore shifts in material, scale, and painterly technique. Pataialii’s practice has long been rooted in material exploration, pairing traditional approaches with unconventional surfaces to expand the possibilities of painting. From early works on synthetic blankets and plastic tarpaulins to stretched drop sheets, she has consistently sought a dialogue between materials and process, investigating how boundaries can shape and challenge creativity.
This series furthers Pataialii’s exploration, employing house paint and acrylic on paper to engage with the unique constraints and possibilities of this medium. The transition to a smaller, more intimate scale invites a fresh examination of her painterly vocabulary, drawing attention to the nuances of composition, gesture, and material interplay. While this body of works holds its own presence, it also reflects her ongoing inquiry into the dynamic balance between material resistance and creative expression, offering an intimate insight into the evolving boundaries of her practice. These works are 1. Lydfield Summer 1998 2. Dusk Fruitvale 3. Wai kōwhai. Please contact the gallery for a digital catalogue of the full suite of 15 works [email protected] or DM me. The gallery is open tomorrow 11-4

Dame Robin White has held a lifelong fascination with Japan. In recent years she has sought out collaborations with Japanese artists and writers. These images are details from her 2019 work ‘Before, Between and Beyond all things’. Made in collaboration with calligrapher Ogawa Taeko and screen maker Yoshishige Tanaka. The work is inspired by the Hiroshima Panels, a series of 15 folding screens depicting the horror of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The calligraphy is a Chinese proverb which doesn’t have a direct translation but refers to the interconnection between all living things. A call for Unity and Peace. A prescient message for these times 💫

📣📣📣Saturday 7th of December join author and ex video artist, Megan Dunn for a candid illustrated talk about art and dreams (her own) that just might also have some relevance to you, especially if you like David Bowie and fish. A (mildly) interactive romp through her life and work, part stand up comedy, part art school rework, Megan reflects on what it is to be an artist (human / mermaid chaser) that just can’t let a bad or a good idea go. Come along and enjoy a free cocktail🧉🍹

Such a delight to have Yuka and Misa visiting the Gallery today with a group of Japanese 🇯🇵 artists and makers 👏This work ‘No ordinary Sun’ is based on a powerful poem by Hone Tuwhare. Hone was part of the allied forces sent to Japan to help after the second world war. In 1959 he wrote this poem about the experience, with a profound antinuclear message. Robin has had the poem translated into Japanese and created this work , as relevant today as the day it was written. This is a woodblock print in edition of four 1.8 x 70, 2024

Thinking of Dad, today 9 years ago he slipped away ✨ from us. This photo was taken by me shortly after returning to Wellington. Enjoy had a group of artists in the building, D.A.N.C.E Linda T, Ahilapalapa Rands and others, filling the building with rose petals and neon signs about LOVE ❤️Dad was captured with this group.
People sometimes share there memories of Dad with me and just a few Days ago a gallery visitor and travel agent of Dads sent me this note about his hat, seems to convey his excitement for life. ‘After one particular trip to Europe he came to see me in the Agency, and his face was beaming like that of a school boy who had just posted a fabulous exam. He looked me straight in the eyes and said:”the trip went well, thank you ....... AND I brought back a Borsalino”. Well? I know, but how he said it, made it appear not like he finally cracked the million Dollar target in the Gallery, but like he had fulfilled himself at last a boyhood dream’. Thanks for sharing Romeo✈️ Thanks for the memories Dad 💞
