NZ Art Show; it was a whirlwind. 👌💕🙏

It’s the final day of the NZ Art Show today.

It’s been a wonderful few days filled with lovely conversations, familiar faces, new connections, and the joy of seeing so many paintings find their new homes.

I’ve also loved catching up with fellow artists and being part of such a vibrant creative community.

Feeling very grateful this afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello so far.

Gradually in the painting process, the basic marks laid down as foundations evolve to become more nuanced and interesting. I never can tell exactly how the final piece will look. I always work just one step at a time, trusting that eventually the painting will come together. It wasn’t until I brushed some areas with a green glaze on this one that I knew it was done.

“Equinox” is available at the NZ Art Show this weekend.

A small detail I’ve been working on for the NZ Art Show.

I wanted something people could take with them if they connected with the work. A little reminder once they’ve left the show of the paintings and the feeling behind them

One side features a landscape work, the other a floral piece, both reflecting different parts of my practice.

It’s been nice thinking about how to translate the atmosphere of the paintings into something small and tactile like this.

A painting from a while back.

I think we underestimate how much our surroundings affect us. We respond to things like colour, light, texture and form constantly, although often without even realising it.

That’s part of what I’m interested in with my work.

I aim to create paintings that bring a sense of ease into a space, while still feeling alive.

There’s a particular feeling that comes with places like this. It’s uplifting, freeing and rejuvenating. While most of us can’t spend our days in wild landscapes, I think we often hope to carry a trace of that feeling with us when we leave. It’s why we pick up the stone and carry it home, why we take photos and also of course, why we enjoy art that echoes the experience.

Following on from the Garden Party exhibition at .nz , you can now see a couple of my landscape paintings there. This one really does lean towards abstraction. There’s just a suggestion of a horizon, upon which the whole interpretation of landscape hangs. If you’re wanting a landscape with a contemporary edge, this is it.

Art as a backdrop to everyday moments. Moments that soon become cherished memories. I guess this photo is making me nostalgic as someone’s about to turn 13 and no longer needs a bedtime story. Hasn’t for a long while. Unlike a bedtime story which has its season then passes on, art can be constant. It can encapsulate a moment and at the same time endures beyond the moment. That’s the appeal of it.
