Almost a year ago, in partnership with Phoenix Recycling Group, we launched Cans for Kai here in Wellington with a simple goal: to turn waste into resource that would help nourish our communities.
Since then, something quite amazing has taken shape.
Thanks to the commitment of 44 businesses, venues and community groups across the region, and the individuals who koha cans when they pick up fish, we’re now collecting around 28,000 cans every week. Every single one gets recycled. And every cent we are paid, is used to get more nutritious kaimoana away from waste and onto dinner tables.
This initiative is working because people are choosing to show up. Bar managers, venue owners, workplace reps, waste teams and volunteers have seen that their empties can do more. That small, steady acts can carry real weight, and a can tossed in our direction can help feed families.
And the more we get, the more kai we can share.
If you’re part of a workplace, a venue, a business, a school, or a group of any kind that’s got a steady stream of aluminium going out the door, we’d love to hear from you. It’s simple, it makes a very real difference, and you’ll be joining a growing network of people using what they’ve got to support something bigger.
Our hearty thanks to everyone who is making this happen.
Let’s keep going.
