Jesus. Some of you might roll your eyes at this episode of Good Sorts At Work because of the J word. That’s ok.

Because Stacey and Carolyn Raika are all about it. The Jesus flag on their fence is a pretty big clue 😂 When I arrived, they were already sitting outside, having a sing. Didn’t bat an eye when I sat down next to them - like it was perfectly normal for a stranger to come on to their property and sit with them.

And that’s because it is. Want a cuppa? Just need someone to talk to? Stresses of the day wearing you down? It’s all good. Stacey and Carolyn are here for it. They’re open, they’re warm, they’re funny (I love funny people) and WOW can they sing.

You know you’re doing something right when people from all across your workplace will come and sing to support you.

Mayor Bernie Wanden took on the challenge of singing with Good Sorts At Work, but felt like he needed a bit of support. And fair enough too - it takes a lot of courage to sing by yourself!

Queue the Horowhenua Councils Waiata group - Te Karanga o te Tūī. A special thing about this group is they are made up of people who represent nearly every work group at the Council - that’s pretty cool.

Mayor Bernie is now in his third term in office, and, judging by the way the waiata group came to support him, is a well respected man.

No singing today - off to Āpiti for a 16th birthday horse riding celebration. Apparently it’s 1 degree with a chance of snow. Ummmm…..

We just have to nip up the road.

Te Mauri Hā Café is a koha-based café built by students of Te Kura ā-Iwi o Whakatipuranga Rua Mano (WRM), right here on the Ōtaki beachfront. What started as an opportunity for students to create a café for the community has grown into something even more special, with local people now helping to run and care for this beautiful little space.

We were there with whaea Selina, who was sharing her knowledge with us, when a woman walking along the beach stopped in for a coffee. Kia Ora Kimi Tala Devlin 💝

And somehow, a coffee turned into joining us for a song.

Three people who had never planned to meet, from completely different walks of life, brought together by music, community and a little bit of chance.

This is what I love about Good Sorts at Work - people connecting ,giving their time and having a bit of fun.

And all with this view.
