Downstage Theatre

Downstage Theatre Downstage: Get Curious New Zealand has hundreds of artists creating work for the stage right here, right now. They are our indie artists.

We invest our time, expertise and infrastructure in the future of New Zealand theatre by staging the work indie artists need to make and indie audiences need to see. Independent in thought, independent in vision – often independent of regular funding and infrastructure. For years they worked in a wilderness, creating projects on a shoestring, winning awards but barely making rent money. Most indie

companies collapsed after a few projects, members scattering to work as hired guns for arts institutions or, worse, leaving the industry altogether. They inspired us to change our whole way of working…
We looked to the fresh creativity of the indie sector and saw they had stories they needed to tell. Stories inspired by life here and now. Stories meant for the people of here and now. Stories told in ways we’d never seen before. Stories that weren’t being heard. Since 2009 we’ve worked to change that. We start by looking for the stand outs…

The work that blows us away and the artists we can instantly believe in. Putting the resources of our company behind their vision we build a programme designed to connect them with a wider audience – and make them a guaranteed income. Plus we enable mid-career artists to present original work without the financial risk of profit-share. This means artists with families can know they’ll put food on the table while delivering work from the prime of their creative careers. Right now we’re staging some of the most exciting work in the country – art that connects with people in a new and more direct way. Plus we’re working for a healthier cultural future. We believe strong artistic voices contribute to the health of our society by inspiring imaginative risk-taking, creative problem solving and independent thinking. We believe a night at our theatre is just a beginning…
