Javier Murcia - Belleza Visceral
Spanish Sculptor Javier Murcia is pleased to present “Belleza Visceral”. This exhibition consists of 10 stunning pieces generously sponsored by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, owners of Weta Workshop. The common theme in these works is the improvisation of textures, intentional misproportions and the explicit handling of colour patinas and oxide. With these, Murcia achieves an oscillation between seductive beauty and deep visceral repulsion, opposites yet complementary in their creation.
Javier Murcia was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain in 1981. In 1998 he moved to Barcelona where he studied fine arts at the University of La Laguna. There he also became fascinated with the study of human anatomy, taking courses in dissection at the School of Medicine. This influenced his work greatly. Since then he has applied this knowledge in detail to plastic media, especially to sculpture and drawing. He started his artistic career with exhibitions and commissions, creating pieces for both the private and public sector of his home town. Between 2010 and 2011 he lived in Copenhagen where he collaborated on a large sculptural project with Christian Lemmerz, one of his main influences. In early 2013 he moved to Wellington.
This exhibition debuts to the public a collection of sculptures of a very personal tone
