Opening tonight at Te Manawa is Emily Hartley-Skudder’s impressive new exhibition of paintings and installation CAMEO.

Bringing together pristine still-life paintings of cleaning products, she-wees and baby bottles with surreal constructions, Emily Hartley-Skudder’s latest body of work responds to Palmerston North’s much-loved historic Ladies Rest public toilets in Te Marae o Hine, The Square. Engaging with the building’s history, the exhibition explores contemporary ideas of feminism, intersectionality, cleanliness, and control.

Emily Hartley-Skudder is the inaugural recipient of the Fair Trust Art Prize. Awarded annually by Eileen Fair Charitable Trust, the $40,000 prize is enabling a mid-career New Zealand artist to create a significant new body of work for public exhibition.

Congratulations Emily! Can’t wait to see the show.

This week our son Atticus turned three.

We had a little party for him at the gallery, and I bought him this outfit to match one of Harry Culy’s photographs on display in our current exhibition.

Atticus has grown up around the gallery and all the exhibitions that have passed through it. He has slept there through plenty of lunchtime naps, watched works arrive and disappear again, and has joined us at three art fairs.

It feels pretty special that this is all so normal to him. What a privilege to grow up surrounded by work that can be challenging, funny, strange, beautiful and important — and by so many artists and people who care deeply about what they make.

Happy third birthday love.

Harry Culy came across this persons collection of Elvis memorabilia in a garage in Hawera, South Taranaki a few years ago and it was a perfect addition to this group of photographs.

Last week to view Tom Mackie’s exhibition Portals, closing this Saturday 11 July.

Pictured are the four Portal works, made from laser-cut brass and framed in oak.

Precisely cut to the forms of found portrait mat boards, the brass surfaces have been intentionally left to tarnish, recording every touch, mark and trace of handling over time. The artist’s hand is simultaneously present and absent, with each work continuing to evolve through use and age.
