Opening tonight at Te Manawa is Emily Hartley-Skudder’s impressive new exhibition of paintings and installation CAMEO.
Bringing together pristine still-life paintings of cleaning products, she-wees and baby bottles with surreal constructions, Emily Hartley-Skudder’s latest body of work responds to Palmerston North’s much-loved historic Ladies Rest public toilets in Te Marae o Hine, The Square. Engaging with the building’s history, the exhibition explores contemporary ideas of feminism, intersectionality, cleanliness, and control.
Emily Hartley-Skudder is the inaugural recipient of the Fair Trust Art Prize. Awarded annually by Eileen Fair Charitable Trust, the $40,000 prize is enabling a mid-career New Zealand artist to create a significant new body of work for public exhibition.
Congratulations Emily! Can’t wait to see the show.
