Jeffrey Harris stands as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most distinguished and original painters – an artist whose decades-long practice has shaped a deeply personal yet widely resonant visual language.

In recent years, Jeffrey Harris has focussed primarily on small-scale works, bringing an added sense of intimacy and intensity. {Suite} presented an exhibition of new Harris works while the Aotearoa Art Fair 2026 took place in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland – this was only the second show of his new works in fifteen years.

Jeffrey Harris’ works are built around simple but psychologically-charged scenes. Rather than telling clear stories, these settings become spaces to explore what it means to be human.

Emotions like love and hate, hope and despair sit side by side, while rituals and recurring symbols invite further reflection - birds hint at the human spirit, roads suggest journeys, and the crucifix speaks to suffering and resilience.

Offering a snapshot – and social commentary – of our world in 2026, Richard Lewer’s deeply personal work shown at the Aotearoa Art Fair captured the good, the bad, and the ugly. There were works that brought joy, alongside some deeper subjects that were a bit taboo. In Richard’s words ‘I don’t always know how to speak about these things but when a work makes me nervous, I usually know I’m on the right path.”
