Kete whakairo with porowhita bottom that I wove during our first lockdown. It took ages because the whenu are very fine! The colour placement is accidental, a learning process for me to understand where each whenu will end up and how it contributes to the overall effect.

I made this kono with a flap on the top as a lid. Its quite cute, like ia little kete. Wove with raw harakeke, which I love but it always dries with big gaps! I added in whenu for the flap, as the whenu for the kono part was not long enough. I think the koru i made from the whiri plait is becoming a signature of mine!

I just love the gigantic pā harakeke at Ngā Manu Reserve, so beautiful.

A friend of mine asked me to weave her daughter a kete. Its the first whiri kete I have woven without the help of my kaiako. I cast it wrong and had to take it apart and do it again. I then wove up the sides to join them and did this wrong twice. The third attempt I got it right! I decided to dip dye the top to make it more interesting and also dyed the taura which I did as a four plait (very uneven!) I curled the whiri finish to make a koru shape which I sewed with cotton to hold. It was a learning curve, but I am thrilled that I managed to do this on my own without guidance.

Beautiful day to hauhake last Monday, the korari was irresistible too. I don't usually bring my children but it's the school holidays. They asked great questions like: why do you only take the grandparent leaves and leave baby and parents? Why does the plant die if you take baby and parent leaves? I answered with Māori analogy between pā harakeke and whānau: grandparents as they get older they pass on and the baby grows to become parents, then grandparents. Same thing!

Pencil case I made for my daughter. The flap came out unintentionally at an angle, but I think I like it like that
