Dunedin based artist Kyla Cresswell's stunning new body of work, 'These quiet places', is currently on display in the gallery. We highly recommend taking the time to view this remarkable exhibition.

Celebrating natural spaces on the periphery, this body of work explores quiet unassuming places within our environment—a wetland on the edge of an estuary,
a tangle of remnant bush, the small plants in a salt marsh.

These works seek to draw our attention to even the smallest part of the
ecosystem, contemplating the importance of the health and interconnectedness of
waterways.

Kyla employs the silverpoint technique to depict wetland oioi plants, drawing onto
prepared boards with 99.9% pure silver. Chosen for its fine, delicate line, the
medium conveys a sense of value and care toward these plants and their habitats
at a time when the environment is under pressure.

The drypoints in this exhibition feature a combination of fine, deliberate mark
making—as in the wetland works, and a more lively exploration of line in the
bushwalk series—recalling the twists of muehlenbeckia and supplejack vines in
southern native bush.

The most recent work, based on the jewel-like glassworts found on salt marshes
near Kyla’s Ōtepoti home, feature hand painted watercolour elements.

A Fine Art graduate of the Dunedin School of Art, Kyla was taught by Marilynn
Webb and Chris de Jong and has pursued her passion for printmaking ever since.

All works in the show were hand inked and printed on an etching press by the
artist.

'Bird Island' by Christchurch based printmaker Ben Reid, from his new exhibition, 'there's no place like home'. This stunning exhibition is currently showing in the gallery, at 33 Helwick Street, Wānaka, and is also available to view online.

New Zealand’s wild pigs — commonly referred to as “Captain Cookers” — continue to have an impact on our environment. Accounts written by Joseph Banks, the botanist on board HMS Endeavour, describes, an environment dense with birdsong and ecological activity. In contrast, the relative silence experienced in many of these places today is stark and humbling.

In this work, the Captain Cooker is transformed into a feathered boar’s head, creating a symbolic connection between introduced predators and the reduction of avian life. The hybrid form references the relationship between birdsong and the health of the forest environment, suggesting an ecosystem shaped by disturbance, predation and silence.

The work also reflects on the artist’s rural upbringing within a culture shaped by farming, hunting, shooting and trapping. While these traditions formed an important part of early life, they have increasingly become a point of reflection and reconsideration, particularly in relation to ideas surrounding the archetypal masculine New Zealand identity.

Formally, the work draws on the visual language of cheaply reproduced posters and public notices. By layering a single additional colour over the black key block, the image evokes methods of rapid print production historically used to distribute information and propaganda. The composition intentionally recalls historical “Wanted: Dead or Alive” posters, connecting histories of pursuit and eradication with contemporary ecological and cultural tensions.
