Ka tanuku, ka tanuku koa!
Ka tanuku ngā tihi tapu o Te Kāhui Maunga whānui, ka horo!
Ka tinei koa te ahi a Tahurangi, ka tinei koa te ahi o Te Turi o Murimotu!
Te pupuketanga o te wānanga, ka pēhi! Te matoe o te reo, ka ngū.
He aha ia rā tēnei hanga whakawairangi nei? He pākikini, he whakahiatangi!

He taura here tangata, he taura here whenua, he taura here whakapapa i toro whānui ai tōna ao Māori.

He puna kōrero nō te whare wānanga.

He kaipupuri nō ngā kōrero tūhāhā, nō ngā kōrero maire, nō ngā kura huna o te whare wānanga tawhito.

Nā, kua motu te aka matua, kua whati te rākau whakaruruhau, kua marere te rau o te huia. Kua wahangū te reo whakataki i te pae. Kua mahue mai ko ngā tapuwae, ko ngā kupu, ko ngā kura huna hei whakatō ki te whatumanawa o ngā uri whakaheke.

He raukawakawa e tīpare ana i Te Kāhui Maunga.

Te Kāhui Maunga mourns the loss of Raymond Kaiki (Tainui, Aotea), a long-serving member of the Aotea Māori Performing Arts Committee, now known as Te Kāhui Maunga, and the founding member of kapa haka Te Ropu Tūtū Kā’ika. Raymond’s contribution and leadership to Te Ropu Tūtū Kā’ika spans many decades including as a performer, composer, tutor, Chairperson and kaumātua.

Raymond was a formidable rangatira within te ao kapa haka, leaving an indelible mark on the taonga through more than four decades of dedicated service. An uri of the Aotea and Tainui waka, Raymond often spoke of being raised at the heels of the great haka exponents of Ngāti Maniapoto and Taranaki. Those early influences ignited a lifelong passion and helped shape the deep technical knowledge and expertise for which he became renowned.

His contribution as a tutor, performer, composer and mentor spanned many decades and numerous rohe throughout Aotearoa. He guided and composed waiata for esteemed rōpū including Te Rōpū Aroha, Te Herenga Waka, Manawatutahi, Te Huatahi, Tamarau, Pukekaraka, Te Wānanga o Raukawa and St Joseph’s Māori Girls College to name a few. Raymond was particularly respected for his exceptional musicality and mastery of choral arrangement, serving as a choral master for the National Māori Chorale and for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taranaki.

On the national stage, Raymond was a pillar of the judging fraternity. He served as a Te Matatini judge across eight campaigns between 2000 and his most recent appointment at Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga 2025. His standing as a head judge was recognised throughout the motu, including within Te Kāhui Maunga, Te Tau Ihu, Te Nehenehenui and Tainui regions, where he presided over competitions ranging from primary school festivals to senior regional championships. His specialist expertise in waiata tira, te kairangi o te mita o te reo, mōteatea and waiata ā ringa reflected his unwavering commitment to the preservation of traditional excellence and the development of future generations of kapa haka practitioners.

Raymond will be remembered as a true toki of te ao kapa haka and a tireless servant of his people of Tainui and Aotea waka. His wisdom, leadership, generosity and dedication have left a legacy that will continue to inspire performers, tutors, judges and whānau for many years to come.

Te Kāhui Maunga acknowledges the immense contribution Raymond made to Māori performing arts regionally and nationally and extends its deepest condolences to his whānau, friends and all those who had the privilege of walking alongside him.

Raymond will lie at Mōkau Kohunui Marae, Piopio, from Saturday 1 August 2026. Te Kāhui Maunga will gather at 2.00pm on Saturday 1 August 2026 to accompany Raymond onto the marae and pay our respects to a revered leader, teacher and kaitiaki of te ao kapa haka.
