Amy Potenger has been working in the studio repurposing her intricate hand-cut paper stencils as masks within richly layered monotypes. Originally used as a means of planning and precision, these stencils now act as active agents in the image-making process, guiding the build-up of ink through repeated layering. Dense passages of colour are developed through successive applications, with fine iridescent dustings introduced between layers, catching light and shifting subtly across the surface. The result is a body of work that sits between painting and print, where process, material, and repetition generate a deep, luminous complexity.

We’re in the middle of a Susan Te Kahurangi King Residency, supported by The Chartwell Trust. The studio is in full swing as Susan develops a new body of etchings and lithographs.

This marks Susan’s third project with APS Editions, and uniquely, she is the only artist to have worked in all five studios we’ve had over the years. A remarkable ongoing collaboration that continues to grow with each residency.

Mark Braunias—Rest in Peace. Beyond being colleagues, I had the privilege of working with Mark in 2016 on a series of stone lithographs—a collaboration I will always remember fondly.

Mark’s process was truly inspiring. I can still picture him surrounded by his arsenal of pens, meticulously creating colour wheels before beginning each drawing. That simple ritual spoke volumes about his thoughtfulness and his deep connection to his craft.

Beyond his prolific practice, Mark had a generous and fearless spirit. I’ve seen him stand up to corporate bullies with unmatched tact and resolve—he had a fight to him. It wasn’t surprising to learn that Mark was a huge fan of boxing. His passion for the sport reflected his approach to life: resilient, strategic, and unwavering.

Mark’s work and spirit will continue to inspire me, and I will miss him deeply. --- John
